    T9600 CPU 3.2
    4 Gig 1333 mhz
    Two GTX 280 SLI
    1 TB Raid 0
    1920x1200 60 hz

Would this R2 build be more powerful in terms of FPS benchmarks in the latest games... ?

    Alienware M17x R2 Laptop
    Processor: Intel Core i7-920 Processor (8MB L3 Cache, 1MB L2 Cache, 2.66GHz)
    Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium

    4 GB DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz (2 DIMMs)
8X DVD +/- RW Optical Drive
Dual 1024MB CrossFireX, ATI Radeon HD 4870
    WXGA+1440x900 screen :/

all the models in the dell outlet are the 1440x900 res. :/

I think it will be very close.

The 280m 's in SLI are comparable to the 4870's, though i think in certain cases the 280's might be slightly faster and in others the 4870's, it's a close call.
The 920 i7 is leagues ahead of the T9600, but for gaming i doubt this will give you noticeable difference.

So in terms of gaming/fps i don't think it's worth to switch (especially taking the wxga screen into consideration).

For benchmarking however the 920 will blow away the T9600 as if it didn't exist.

Your own raid0 setup is also likely alot faster then the single 7200rpm hard drive in the other system.

With your mentioned setup i would only upgrade for 5870's in xfire or higher, and a raid0 harddrive setup or ssd.
It's not worth the cash upgrading for you imo.

Just put a QX9300(2,53Mhz stock but OCs like crazy,12Mb cache ) in your rig and you'll be happy.
There's nothing in the R2 that can't be fit in the R1 except the Mobilities 5870.
It's not worth going down for a R2 in the outlet ATM,keep your screen.Plus it's not a big jump going to a R2.

It is just crazy going for a R2, with the "M18X" around the corner. Keep your R1 and get a QX9300/Q9200 with TS, and you are done.

ok thanks. what is the TS and if the SLI GPU were 260's instead of 280's would it change things much?

With the R2 wouldn't I also be getting a lot better battery life?

As has been mentioned, it does appear that I should stay with the R1

get a Qx9300 or Q9200 (make sure its QAVR, if you can find one) and OC the out of it. Also, i went from a T9600 to a Q9200, and I've yet to come across any games other than BFBC2 and DAO that make use of it. My t9600 had no problems running 3.4ghz.

I agree with the processor suggestion but no one knows when m18x is due, there is nothing official and with the SB fiasco and no 6970's in circulation I don't think any replacement is likely until June with delivery probably around July.

Yeah, it works. Problem is that they're $1,000.

    Thanks :)

i think OP got his answer, sry for the offtopic.

a friend of mine, he luv my R1 screen more than his R2 RGB-LED (too oversaturated, and lower contrast for him)

my problem now is RGB-LED require more Watts, right ?
    it's a pain for R1 since Gtx280m + QX9300 required too much watts already.

TS means ThrottleStop, is a free software, which helps with the CPU throttling, and unlock the multiplier in Extreme CPUs, besides allow users to increase the Voltage in CPU's to get stability when overclocking. I can easily reach 3.6 GHz on my QX9300 and probably more.

About battery performance I think R1 should be better, because you can shutdown the discrete cards and use only the 9400M G. R2 does not have any IGP (but I am not sure).

And about the GTX 260, I think it should be something around a 15% slower than a GTX 280M, but you can check reviews in the web.

Mobility 5870 + i7 920XM is almost the same as GTX 280M + QX9300 in power consummation, and both R1 and R2 comes with a 240 watt AC adapter, so I don't think there will be a power issue.

There were some really good R2 models in the last few weeks with 5870's, RGB and 920/940XM. Too bad they have disappeared. Two options:

    1) Wait for few more days. Moment an outlet R2 appears with RGB screen and 5870's, jump on it. Changing the CPU is not that bad.
    2) Your laptop is still pretty decent. Wait for a bigger upgrade like the 6970 or the rumored M18x.
