I'm thinking of buying an SSD from Dell mainly because i have like $100 left in my eGift card balance which would help me with only having to pay like another $100 out of my own pocket.

I've read quite a couple of threads about SSDs but i still can't make up my mind about which brand, especially the ones that Dell have. so which would you recommend?

I'm looking for a 256 GB one and so far the best options that i can see are the OCZ Vertex 4 series or the Kingston 256 GB 2.5-inch SATA 3 SSDNow V200 Internal Solid State Drive.

Between those two SSDs, go with the Vertex 4. Much better drive compared to the V200 series.

Yea. I'm very please with my Vertex 4. I am planning on eventually replacing it with a Samsung M4 later on. Possibly sell the Vertex 4 so I can free up the slot and use it with another 750GB and do a Raid 0 or 1.

Apparently Dell is out of stock for the OCZ vertex 4 SSD =/ I'm thinking of just buying the Samsung 256GB 830 series which i have heard is really good.

The Samsungs are really good. They're just really expensive as well.

Go to the Business dell and they have twice the number of SSD's there. I have bought 3 480GB SSD's and love them. They are on the same price point as newegg.

Wouldn't the drives have to be identical in size/speed in order to do either RAID 0 or RAID 1?

Not always, but optimally...yes. If you have a 256GB Vertex 4 (SATA III), and a 512GB Samsung M4 (SATA III), you can run a SATA III RAID 0 array between the two SSDs, but its capacity will only be 512GB (2 x 256GB). If two disks of a RAID array are different sizes, the controller always treats the larger sized disk as if it were the same size as the smaller disk. The same thing goes for SATA speed levels. If one was SATA II and one SATA III, the controller would default to SATA II.

Best case scenario yes it would be preferred. I happen to had gotten a Western Digital Black 750GB though prior to getting this laptop and the one that came installed was the same drive so I have a matching pair. Just one of them is not installed at the moment because I have a 256GB SSD in the slot. I'll swap them out when I get a mSATA in the future.

Actually I believe the intel chip in our laptop allows us to setup 256GB Raid 1 and a 256GB standalone in that scenario. Also you could do the same for the Raid 0 as well.

I believe the difference being that you would configure it via the IRST tool rather than directly in BIOS.
