I just ordered my m17x R3 today .. and it's such an honor joining your community which really helped me choose the best beast I can afford ..
    those are my specifications:

    i7-2760QM
500 GB SATA Hard Drive (7200RPM)
    4 GB DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz
    8X DVD +/- RW Drive
    AMD Radeon HD 6990M
    Wide FHD (1920x1080 60Hz) WLED
    Killer Wireless-N 1103 a/g/n 3x3 MIMO
    Dell Wireless 375 Bluetooth Module

I'm from Egypt and a friend will bring it from the US.
I am thinking of adding some muscles to it because there won't be any chance for upgrades here in Egypt.
I will put 8 gigs of ram for 40 $ from newegg (no problem here at all)

I'm thinking of small SSD drive as a boot drive
my choices are narrowed to 64 gig either Crucial M4 or the Samsung 830 ..
still very confused because everybody is recommending the M4 but the Samsung has much higher random read speed (as far as I know it the most important for a windows drive)

Which I should buy and where I can get it in a perfect condition (there won't be a chance to return anything)
also I heard sometimes there is a missing piece (imposer or something) to connect the SSD .. my laptop is refurbished .. what I might need to install it ?and where I can find it ?

I do appreciate your help .
all your suggestions are very welcome ..
    Thank you all :)

Get the SSD with the most capacity. That is what I would do if I could go back. Any SSD is going to blow an HDD out of the water. As far as numbers go, a benchmark might show that one is faster than the other, but for everyday use you won't know the difference. What is important is replacing that mechanical drive. Are they both 64GB? That is a very small disk, and there won't be much left for anything else once it is formatted with Windows installed. Nature of the beast, unfortunately.

The part you're talking about is an interposer, I think. If your SSD is replacing the primary drive you already have, you won't need anything.

definitely, just try to get your budget around 150-200 and buy at least 128GB

64 is what I can afford for now ..
and I see it more than enough for just the windows as I will keep the 500 inside ..
so I think I would need the interposer ??

yeah doc. get the interposer...heck if you have one preinstalled so much the better, an extra one won't hurt.....

like every one else...i will say GET the largest drive you can get your hands on...heck if money is such an issue, get a SATAII ssd drive ...it should (IMO) theoretically ice any commercially available 7200 rpm drive...and as a bonus give you faster boot and load times and save you power and heat.....

the biggest problem with the 64 gb is..
    1) it will be redundant soon enough....as the space for windows increases (you could delay the inevitable and install apps on another hdd...but it would be a temporizing measure)
    2) eventually when u get the 256 or something-ssd...what'll happen to the 64.....wasted
    3) i'd rather (if money is impossible) not buy the SSD now...and wait for it....mebe a black saturday-deal or something.....

The Samsung may be the superior drive. i think you get the M4 recommendation because many of us actually have experience with this drive and its a very stable and good performer. The Samsung 830 is new? In my experience, you want to stay away from something that is brand new. There are bound to be bugs that need to be ironed out. It will save you some headaches

The M4 is trouble free for almost everyone here. That is a big selling point. I'll take guaranteed stability over a slight speed increase any day. When the Samsung 830 becomes more mainstream, it may also prove to be a very good, stable drive too

I have the 128Gb M4. Its a great drive, but I wish I spent the extra money and went one size larger. Thats just how this game goes though, never enough.

With that said, I wouldn't even look at a 64Gb SSD. Too small IMO.

Nassef...if you are desperate to spend some money...i'd say go for the OCZ synapse range...atleast once the proggie cache's you should have some theoretical improvement at your price point

Making the change to SSD is massive, personally i do not want anything to run on a mechanical drive anymore so i would suggest, get a big SSD cause you're a gonna (want to) use it. the way i use my SSD (a 160G intel x25m) as all purpose disk. i mainly game on my systems with steam so i download the game play it all through and if i need some space i just remove the local content. this strategy works quite good cause i don't store anything special on this systems. for that i have a home server...

dr.nassef I'd recommend you the Agility 3 as well. Far more cost efficient than the others. Also it is ~100$ so you won't be too much invested in it.

When you have enough money, you can go for something better. Then I'd recommend you to stick with Intel SSDs (from personal experience)

i agree the samsung is an excellent piece of kit..... but even now, i'd have gone with the crucial cuz' it was trialled and tested.....
