    So I have had the R3 for a while, both the CPU and GPU are below 80 C under load, it's not like the temp is bad but I like to see lower temp and consider buying a new cooler, what's your experience with coolers for R3? Anyone can make some recommendation?

    Thanks in advance!!

    I have a black Cryo LX, it seems to work really well. It looks fantastic - almost as if it was made for the M17x! and its relatively portable as it folds and i can carry it in my bag. I read a review on overclockersclub that compared cooling performance of a bunch of different coolers - the cryo lx was on top. There are a couple of new ones that i considered the coolermaster strikeforce (which i decided was too bulky and wouldn't cool as well as the cryo (owing to its fan placement) and the notepal U3 which is super flexible to configure but heard bad things about reliability n stuff.

    Hope this helps! :)

    Prop a book under your R3.......cheapest and best way to cool it!!!

    Lol, that too (the NZXT and a book) but I'd like to put one more name into contention:

    Cooler Master SF-19. It has a USB 3.0/2.0 hub (depending on which model you choose) and don't listen to carthik. Every brand has a few lemons, and I have to say that the SF has far fewer bad items than most other brands.

    For a few months I had been using a cooler, but it turns out that the R3 actually cools better without it when I tried just propping up the back, instead. Now I don't even use my cooler, since it actually was preventing it from cooling properly.

    If you are going to be rude, just make sure you have reason to be. I didn't say the SF19 had lemons first of all... only that the notepal u3 is unreliable (owing to flimsy fan cables). Random failures are understandable if they are backed by good warranties, but when the wiring is obviously flimsy, and people are having issues because of it, it may be wise to avoid.

    I have the U3 and I love it. Can't compare it to other laptop coolers because this is my first, but works great so far. Maybe I should setup my laptop of a before and after temps wise. I have two of the fans positioned under the laptop intake fans, and the last one in the middle of those because that is where the GPU and CPU sit.

    Not looking to be rude or anything, and I am sincerely sorry if I offended.

    I was just advising the OP to take everything (including my advice) with a grain of salt. Just because one person has a bad experience does not brand it as truth.

    Yea I agree. Not on the cooler issue but lemons. My first R3 from the factory was a lemon. Didnt even turn on. Just went to a white screen and 8 beeps. They even cam and swapped out half the computer with new parts and did the same thing.

    My replacement R3 is perfect and brand new from Alienware factory.

    I was thinking about getting a U3 too mostly because it is inexpensive and it got quite good reviews around. Could you do a comparison about the temp with/without the cooler and post the results here? Thanks a lot!!

    And thanks for everyone's reply!

    Zalman zm-nc2500 plus. 2 fans, couple of usb ports and an extra HD bay.

    Mysterious, no problem , I might've over reacted too.

    Anyway, what I was trying to point out with the U3 was that when I was doing my research, I came across multiple reviews that complained that the power cords on the fans were flimsy and came apart easily. This is not a lemon - its a design flaw and hence something that should be considered.

    But cost wise, the U3 is a less than half the price of the cryo, so thats a good deal. Performance wise, the cryo has 3 120mm fans powered by a seperate power adapter whereas the U3 has 3 80mm fans that are powered via the usb port which would limit its cooling ability.

    But mine are adjustable speed wise and location wise. Plus, the stand itself is very open and promotes airflow.

    Yea patriot, but the cryo already has the fans placed ideally i think for the m17x. And I've tested a U2 at the store before which has identical fans i presume and they were not nearly as quick - mainly because of the usb power i'm guessing.

    +1 to this

    NotePal U3 - Cooler Master

    BEst so far, the thing you have to worry about is that most coolers suck air down and out, while the M17x R3 is trying to suck in cool air to blow out of the vents.

    This cooler lets you position the fans, which blow cool air up, to be right under the m17 fans, so your blowing cooler air into the fans.

    And because it has three you can put one in the middle which can get hot.

    And at $30 its a huge show stopper! I love mine!!!

    PS you can save space by putting your laptop in the cooler, or technically underneath it for storage.

    I do not like coolers that require another plugging from my wall, since in most of my situations in the military im already limited.

    Just my 0.02 cents

    I have that one too. It's my first laptop cooler so I came here to see if I should upgrade ;)

    I just did 3 tests: using the cooler, a 1 inch lift at the back and flat on the table. I ran a quick section of a game that taxes the video card during a fight and then has moderate load for a while so I can get temperature stats for max and average load:

    Cooler = max 70deg, avg 63deg
    1" lift = max 71deg, avg 63deg
    Flat = max 73deg, avg 68deg.

    So flat is simply bad but the cooler is about equal with just propping up the back :( I might give the Cryo LX a try, if I do I'll report back.

    Very interesting result, so propping up the back of the laptop seems to be the best way to cool the laptop, at least cost-efficiency wise.

    Anyone with Cryo can throw in some test results?
