Which one do you think has the best cooling, display, keyboard, trackpad and chassis?

In terms of performance they are pretty much identical, certainly if they are upgraded with the 3940XM and the 4940MX. Those CPUs are pretty much the same in performance especially when overclocked.

Personally I would keep the one with the best cooling.

    Personally, M17xR4 > AW17 R1.

    M17xR4:

Better design (I love the design of the M17x/M18x series compared to the newer ones)

Good unlocked BIOS (many options available, there's one for the AW17 as well now though but I believe the M17x one has more options)

Control cooling (HWINFO allows you to control the fans on the M17xR4 manually, AW17 R1 has a worse fan profile)

HDMI IN & Out as separate ports (AW17 has one hybrid port)

eSATA (I use this a lot, don't know if it's relevant to you)

Sound (M17xR4 has better sound IMO)

Battery (M17xR4 has a better battery from my experience & it's hot swappable easy)

Keyboard (I prefer the M17xR4 style keyboard but the AW17 isn't bad)

I know I'm forgetting stuff but that's most of it.

R4 :D . I love that you can have HDMI in and at the same time have HDMI out to the Big Screen, while HDMI in is still displaying on your laptop and HDMI out to the big screen. I don't think any laptop out there that can multitask like the R4 or M18x's

I love my Alienware 17 R1, that being said there is way more I/O on the R4, better fan tables, etc.

I believe you can upgrade the R4 to the 1070 as well so there respective thresholds on the GPU side are similar.

I would probably stick with the R4 and upgrade it over time, unless of course you have a use for AVX2 but you would likely already know if you have need of that.
