I'm suddenly getting a white screen with nothing but the mouse cursor for about 10-15 seconds after the welcome screen. Some online say this is some virus, some say spyware, but I have run (in safe mode) avast, malwarebytes, spybot and sfc scanner and they have found nothing... any ideas? for some reason, my system restore has been off, so there are no restore points. should i do a clean install?

You could boot into safe mode with command prompt and type chkdsk /r
Wait for it to scan your hard drive, then try to boot normally.
you can also try uninstalling drivers in safe mode, claen Windows boot.....

If you can't go back in time then....

...backup your data from C and format/ reinstall windows, it only takes 20 minutes or so, and you will save huge amount of time. Investigating is a wise idea of solving things, but not always.

Recently in my job, i was investigating those kind of problems for hours (3 or 4 laptops), and ended up on resetting windows to factory settings....much more quicker option.....

You can also try running a PSA to look for HW errors.

tried the PSA and chkdsk and they both found nothing except my battery is almost worn out (64%). I also tried the MS Malicious Software Removal Tool - July 2013 and the MS Safety Scanner and they found nothing. The only thing I've noticed is that the issue also seems to persist in safe mode with networking, but not in minimal safe mode. The only network changes I've made were that I've mapped my two WDTV Live boxes in My Computer. Could this be the issue? There is no other evidence of virus or malware. Most people say the white screen is part of the problem, and their computer will be locked or reboot itself or their internet will be plagued with some fake FBI warning, but I have none of these issues, it just goes white for a while and then starts normally.

Okay, it seemed to be the two networked drives. I disabled them and I've booted normally twice now and no white screen. Any ideas why the drives would cause this?
