    Hey guys,

I'm having hard time to choose between 6990 vs gtx 580, and also harder time choosing m17x r3 vs m18x, and was wondering what made you to choose M17X R3 instead of M18X?

I've read enough reviews, comparisons, but I figured, if someone recently purchased the M17X R3 instead of M18X, there must have been some factor that was better for the person. what's yours?

I would like the laptop to last at least 2 hours on surfing webs and such, and lighter the better, but at the same time, wouldn't i be better off to spent 2000+ and get dual video cards? and m17x doesn't seem to be a laptop to play with on bed as well before passing out..

I'm pretty a newbie when it comes to computers, and only picked up all these things very recently, so Any opinions are appreciated!

M18x was just too big. You get everything the M18x offers in the R3 apart from dual video cards. The M17x R3 also has the 3D option. The M18x doesn't. And the "portability" is reasonably manageable in the R3.

17 inches is also fairly common so LCD mods are easier such as the B+RG mod in this forum and I'm hopefully going to see if the IPS screen from the M6600 is doable.

m17x-r3 is a portable laptop, m18x is a desktop... 5.5kgs is too much, just too much.. I got m17x as this is still portable at 4.2kgs, I am carrying it everywhere, m18x I am sure it would have caused a lot of shoulder pain...

I got the m17x because I liked the power it has, yet also the battery life to last though school if I need it too. Its also really not that heavy ;) If you plan on mainly leaving your laptop on your desk, I'd advise the m18x, but if its gonna be moved around frequently get the m17x :)

Mmmmmm I'm sold. I just gotta find a decent M17X R3 on sales section, or hope dell puts some serious discount on M17X R3 on the web.. and stay away from mint M18X listings..

    Thanks guys!

One, 18x was too big... not the screen, but would not fit in my bags, and the case is just too big. Two, the 18x is too heavy. Three, in Canada at the time, the 18x could not be configured with Nvidia T.T (Im a Nvidia guy all the way). Last, I like the 3d XD movies, and games... oh ya... and the battery life is so much longer~!

I bring my lappy with me everywhere~! and the 18x was just too much to take with me. The 17x R3 is light, fits in my bags, the screen goes SUPER BRIGHT, its 3D, the battery lasts longer, ext... the 18x is a desktop machine... if I want a desktop machine id get one 0_o ... yaeh... thats about it.

m17x r3 as it has high end power and I can carry it easily to classes and around the house. Its a personal choice for me due to my need for system to be mobile daily. If the system never moved I would large hard into the m18x but would need another system to carry around.

    Value
Finickyness of Dual GPU Cards avoided
    Portability
3D available and no 18x available at the time of 1st purchase...
    Lower Heat/Power Consumption

I already have an M17x R2 and the screen on the M18x is garbage... Don't care what M18x users have to say about that you spend 2,000+ dollars and you get that? That's a NO NO in my book. :( There is a word for what they call that it's"Settling" and I'm really not willing to do that when I spend 2,000+ dollars.

Did you guys purchase extended warranty? It adds quite a bit on pricing. Would it be too much to get the 4 year warranty?

I didn't buy an additional warranty and I regretted it. I ended up having to buy the accidental damage warranty for a lot more money :(

I wanted a powerful gaming laptop, but not something that was too big. I carry around my laptop to my university classes and I find that, although it is big, it isn't too big to carry around every day.

    I didn't.
Why? Because two is better than one ;) and aluminium > plastic.

I would buy M18x for the above reasons. Soft touch comes off M17x-R3 quickly/easily according to those here and I prefer the aluminum even though it is heavier.

I actually didn't find the aluminium > plastic point effect my decision in which one to get in any way (And ive been on both!) the plastic/rubber finnish is beast on the m17x r3, although probably weaker they're both great materials, and im hoping i dont ruin my soft touch! O,O
