I'm just wondering why there's no support for two graphics cards on the M17x R3 as there is with the R2. It seems like a step back to me. The only reason I can think is that Dell are wanting to push the M18x as the top machine now so they have more of a even product range.

    You partially answered your question.
Dell discontinued the M15x line and released the M14x and M17x R3 instead, now the M18x is considered the true replacement for the previous M17x and M17x R2.

if they did dual card support it would draw sales away from the m18x. the m18x is the new alienware flagship

As it's been stated, the M18x is now flagship Alienware. I believe Dell chose a completely different OEM for M17x/M18x, changing from Flextronics to Compal? The R2/R1 were made by Flextronics and housed metal chassis, while the R3 uses...plastic.
