I dont understand towards which crowd the moderators are leaning towards. I think now that R2 is no more being offered in all the relevant markets its only fair that notebookreview.com allows a fair discussion for those who already have R2 and are thinking purchasing the R3 as an upgrade. Some may cry and crib and claim that this is not the successor of R2 but well its too bad..
Alienware m17x r2 is followed by the name Alienware m17x r3. It doesn't matter what the fanboys think or speculate or read. Officially as per Dell's nomenclature R3 is the successor of R2.
And I feel the moderators are not sticking to the original spirit of notebookreview.com which all about reviewing and comparing. Why do you seem to be protecting Alienware M17x R2. I think if any individual is adult enough to come to this forum and post his views, lets just take it or leave it. If anyone gets offensive just warn or delete his post.
Instead of that dont block users from effective discussion. The information on R3 and R2 which makes it critical for users to make a decision is in bits and pieces all over the place. Until now there are various contradictions and rather lots of personal assumption on the said model.
This seems to be viral in the alienware M17x threads..Its much more objective on the other model threads.
I urge the moderators to allow the discussion. For example...I really want to know, as to why R3 is considered sub to R2. Forget about the chassis, i am referring to the hardware in the technological and ergonomic aspect of the models. Chassis and aethetics are foregone conclusions in the current phase of profit taking measures.
This website is called a notebookreview.com but I dont see a single substantiated review by people who are in the know how on this matter. Why is it so? On top of that you have dark knights trying to clip what everyone wants to discuss.
Telling users to choose the system that suits them best is easier said than done. It doesnt work that way not when technology is always on the bleeding age rather than cutting age with a life span of 6 months.
So once more ...I positively urge the forum moderators to allow current R2 owners to discuss with R3 owners over the high and lows of the new successor of R2. This really will help us. I think those who are not in anyway interested but are only having the urge to be vindictive should take a hike and not participate. Forums should be as objective as possible. This is where the moderators should play their rule. The beginning of the thread should meet the end of it.

vads, they have allowed it in a few cases. In fact, I think there is still an active one running, though no one has posted in it for a while. The problem with it, among other things, is that it tends to go nowhere and offers little of value. I have read lots of posts about that topic and they gradually became meaningless and really wouldn't help anyone make up their mind. The opinions fly, but nothing all that useful comes of it. They don't want this forum degenerating into nothing but that kind of chaos.
-
EDIT: Chaos leads to hardwork for Mods to clean it up, I agree. But people also have the choice of skipping a few pages, or not reading stuff, etc. Nonetheless, amidst all the chaos, I was able to actually learn a lot of stuff, so IMO it's been helpful to me to read stuff from all perspectives. Ultimately though, what we all want is a safe and organized neighborhood to communicate, and also to learn. -
I do agree with you on many levels but I think it should be left to the readers of the forum to discern. In any medium of of discussion there will be tangential talk. This is being human.
We just have to keep as close as possible to the main topic. I have read bits and pieces here and there of this and that. I am referring to R3 for eg. I read someone mentioned about the media buttons being a pain in the butt and then another mentioned some metallic strip near the buttons are coming off. After a few lines there is no conclusion to it. It leaves much to be desired in terms of knowing if this is happening to others or is an impending wear and tear sequelay etc.
I have had to put up individual threads to find out these matters.. and if you look at the viewers, there are plenty...Why? because everyone wants to know more in detail about the pros and cons. R3 has been besmirched with lots of suppositions since its release in February. And I think its kinda of getting out of hand with information flying all over the place. We need some uniformity within this heading of Alienware M17x or a separate heading for R3 as some are adamant that this is not the successor.
OR allow an in depth discussion under one thread over relevant matters. They have so many threads now for R3 and its not even being updated proper. A good example is First Impressions.
Most are inaccurate. Its subjective. I think time for first impressions and glossing over should take a back seat now and definitive discussion should take place..
We should ask ourselves....why are we in notebookreview.com.? Is it for benchmarking chest thumping or benchmarking for better understanding of the newer tech. If it was for the former than I think you seriously consider renaming it to notebookbenching.com -

vads, it's always subjective. Always. And then, it gets contentious (and subjective). And then, it gets speculative, contentious, and subjective, because they have only been out for a very short time and no one can give you longevity figures. Trust me, in time you will get your answers, because more and more people will have them and their long-run experience will show. Until then, we are all guessing, even those who actually have them.

Seriously, how can you wait two months? I'm canceling if it takes more than two weeks. While I understand it might take some time to build, to wait for two months is just unacceptable. Two weeks is all I'm giving them.

I do understand but not everything is subjective when you are talking about hardware and performance. For example I do understand if you were to say, the screen appears crisp. I might say its not. Thats fine. But would you say the same thing when we all had problems with the touchpad in R2 and R1. It was definitive and objective for all those who use it.
As for R3 some one mentioned the soft rubber coat is wearing out. Now that is something that alot of users like me who are mobile will be wanting to see or find out more about.
I have been following the R3 development here since end of Jan. And I think during the first release we were exposed to many pertinent questions and if had received one now , I would have definitely sat down and thought of all you guys who have been having unanswered questions because I know there are many who visit this forum and this site to make a choice before they place their savings into a system. Its not that difficult. -
I am in a dilemma whether to go for an R3, A Dell Precision m6600 or just stick with my R2 Crossfire for which I can easily demand a i7 940QM Extreme.
I am glad Sandy Bridge happened because it gave all of us time to deliberate. -
All threads have to follow the forum rules...no exception.
We take closing threads very seriously. Lack of civility has forced our hand and we have made the difficult decision of temporarily not allowing debates of these revisions in the AW forum(those who are interested in buying one of these notebooks are still free to ask specific question about a model or can make a thread in the WNSIB forum).
Also, our decisions can change in the future. For example, until recently speculation threads were not allowed. Now, we even have a central thread dedicated to these speculations so that people can get a clearer picture of what lies in the horizon(so that you guys know exactly when to throw a temper tantrum to get your parents to buy the latest AW notebook).
jking-joking helps reduce tensions
Remember to have patience and follow this Chinese proverb:'it is better to light a candle. then to curse the darkness.' If you feel that these debates are important, check with Batboy or Charles P. Jefferies to see if our position has changed.
With that in mind and we are already getting off topic, thread closed.
Why shouldnt we be allowed to compared R2 and R3 objectively on technical grounds without Fanboys clouding the scene.
