Just get an mpcie to m.2 adapter and shouldnt be a problem.
-
Aren't the antenna connectors different as well though?
-
There are adapters to connect the old MHF 4 antennas into the newer u.FL connectors on the WiFi cards.
-
Which most adapters come with, mine does.
I havent had the time to actually install it yet on my machine, was hoping to this weekend, maybe Sunday. -
Just thought about updating my wifi network to a new wifi 6 router . Was curious if anyone updated there cards in the laptops and if there was an issues or not .

I dont have a WiFi6 router, I can only confirm/deny that the WLAN card works with my existing network.
Going to likely be working 20 hours today so today is out, if I remember to gather my thoughts well enough to bring what I need ill take care of it then lol. -
Can confirm with mpcie to m.2 adapter the AX1650x works as desired.

1. Does this upgrade help with wifi reception at all? Mine seems to get worse reception then my friends new laptop.
2. Do I need adaptors to my old antennas to the new card?
3. What mpcie to m.2 card are you using ? I can't seem to find any mpcie to m.2 cards.
4. Is the wifi card I attached as a picture the one your using?
Thanks for all the help you have given so far. I really appreciate it!!

I seem to get less drops now, but I cant say for certain since its only been running today. The adapters are included with the link above.
That Killer AX1650x is the same I am using.Pcwizkid1994 likes this. -
Wow cool. So the "mSATA" slot in the Alienware is actually a shared mPCIe/mSATA. Otherwise that adapter would not work.

All modern wifi cards utilize m.2 form factor these days.
My mpcie is routed via PCIe x1 I believe, which at the max should be able to handle 5Gbps. I dont think it can be used for SATA devices but someone else is welcome to try.
I am looking into a Wifi 6 router as I would like to use steam streaming which would allow me to sell off my AW13 R3 without feeling like I lost a function.
Waiting on the Archer AX50 to release and hopefully some reviews can come of it. -
There are a lot of boards out there where the PCIe lanes aren't routed to the connector. So people buy a M.2 adapter and then wonder why their device does not show up. (Trying to pipe a SATA -> PCIe since NVMe use PCIe)
For example you can find a ton of SATA to M.2 adapters on Amazon. Totally useless unless your system designer happened to route PCIe via SATA connector. Or the M.2 is actually a SATA controller w NGFF connector.Last edited: Oct 24, 2019 -
I am waiting for my adapter to come in from China and then can test wifi 6 on a wifi 6 router.

I do have a second mpcie slot on the backside of the motherboard but that was originally meant for wireless HD which never actually took off (formerly known as DMC) I think that is routed differently pending the type of laptop you have (USB vs potential PCIe). I use that for an internal USB port which I made a mod to use as a hub. But I will instead just use it for 1 5TB drive as its more consistent with less devices sipping power. -
Thanks for continuing to blaze new trails. Now go flash your VBIOS to higher TDP =)

EDIT: I have plans for that coming up, already have all the needed parts for it. Just need to cut up the chassis some more to allow for my scenarioLast edited: Oct 24, 2019 -

The right and left forks can be broken off.
When the card is installed in the adapter leave about 2mm of height before tightening the screw as you will need the clearance when you install the adpater to the mpcie slot, then fasten the rest of the screw on the WiFi module, in this case the AX1650 -
Cut these:
Might try this in my M18xR2 in the future. Lots of room and two slots but no Wifi 6 routers yet.Pcwizkid1994 likes this. -
You can bend them off quite easily, no need for scissors or the like.

Just return that and get the Intel variant, the ax200/ax201 iirc should be cheaper too?

I think the 201 has some enterprise kind of feature support but for most it's not needed or wanted (save for the network admin types who enjoy that sort of thing)
Otherwise it's the same wifi module, killer just rebrands the card and resale. -

Never heard of okn just read some of the reviews make sure it's legit, if it looks good then pull the trigger.

Can you tell me what I am doing wrong? The adapter card is longer then the slot. Do I need to take my laptop apart to make it fit?

Ah I completely forgot that I removed the CMOS battery cage from my chassis.
Makes resetting CMOS significantly easier, and gave clearance for that adapter to be secured. -
It seems that the antenna connectors are smaller as well or am I imagining that?

Seemed to be the key term was "U.FL to MHF4". Looks like this one will work https://www.amazon.com/Superbat-Female-Pigtail-Low-Loss-Extension/dp/B07SZBKYHP?th=1
There were cheaper ones on eBay, but I can have this one tomorrow. Funny, I just got my 10+ (upgrading from the 8). Thanks.
Wifi upgrade?
