So I got a quick question for anyone with the new 17's. When you plug your power cable into the side of the laptop, is it rather wobbly for everyone else? Mine moves up and down and side to side.

I took a pen and put it in the middle of the male connector on the inside of the laptop and moved it around and it did move up and down and side to side (so it's the part inside the laptop that is connected to the mother board, and not the actual power cable that plugs in as it is rather a firm fit). In my other laptops this was solidly attached and didn't move at all. This has me rather worried.

I don't know how to post video's on here so I'll link the same one that's in my Alienware arena forums:

also same thread in the arena forums:

Wow that can move a lot ! On my old m17x the plug never move like this. And it's quiet dangerous when you think at the current that goes through this. Do you seen the laptop going on battery mode and back to power supply mode when you move it like this ?

No, it stays on power. If you look at the bottom link which is my original thread on arena. It seems most of the folks have a similar issue. Like 6 out of 8 I've talked to so far. One that doesn't has the older 17 model as well. So I'm wondering if it's a newer feature that's like a safety feature to keep it from breaking so easily or something. Because I just don't know how I feel about 6 out of 8 people saying that their laptop does the same exact thing ...

I have an Alienware 17 (R1) as well, the plug can wiggle in the same way as yours, however mine doesn't go to battery mode when that happens.
If you wiggle it and it doesn't go into battery mode, I wouldn't worry about it.

The DC is fine if you can removed the battery, wiggle the PSU and power does not cut off at any point. The DC being loose on the other hand is not something welcome in a laptop. Over time, the plastics will wear out more. Depending on how the DC is connected to the mainboard, cables might start to wear out at some point in the future. To resolve this, a new bottom case or top case (depending where the plastic bits holding DC in place are on your laptop, most likely the bottom case) will need replacing or DC gluing in place with some epoxy glue.

when you say DC what are you refering to? So is this something I should just keep an eye on or should I send it back in your opinion? On my other thread, 6 out of the 8 people have the same thing with their 17, one of the ones not has one of the older ones 2013 or 2014 i think. So don't know if they are the same internally or not.

I am referring to the port itself in the laptop where you plug in your charger. I would keep an eye on it and see if it becomes loose to the point, where the machine starts loosing power before your warranty expires. DC in my M17x R4 is a bit loose as well, but the laptop is now nearly 3 years old and I never had any problems with charging.

If you look at the page 93 you will see that the connector is not an onboard soldered one ( wow i might have find a good things in this laptop ! ) so it's totally normal, this connector is just hold by some plastic, don't move it too much maybe to not damage the main frame that hold it, or glue it when the warranty is out like marussx said.

Holy heck dude you just made my day. I didn't even think about looking in the thing for how to take it out yet! man that's awesome, it seems if it breaks that the part can easily (relative term) be replaced. Thanks so much for the help guys! I'll be sure to update my other threads with the info in case other people have the problem as well!
