I'd like to connect my m17xr2 to an apple cinema display 27", however the m17xr2 does not have a mini displayport. I'd like to connect these two, and get the full 2560x1440 resolution. Is this possible? I appreciate any advise on this.

    What are your GPUs?
If you have the mobility 5870, you're in luck they support 2560x1600 maximum thru display port, 1920x1200 thru HDMI (1.3) maximum and 2048x1536 thru VGA.
If you have the GTX 285M then 2048x1536 is max.
If you have the mobility 4870 max thru Display port is 2560x1600 and 1920x1080 thru HDMI.

Also the M17x R2 does have a Display Port so maybe you could get a DP to miniDP adapter/cable.

    Cheers
