    Will a 3840 QM for my M17X R4, be worth it over a 3740QM?

I have the 3740QM stable OC all cores @3.77ghz and single core 4.08ghz, for longevity sakes im looking to the 3820QM as a step up, but would it be worth it?

Does it have higher overclock multipliers?
If I can pull 4+ghz stable on all cores i'd be really pleased but I'm curious if the 3840 would be able to do that.
Right now I've got the multipliers at max for all cores and the BCLK upped 2mhz to hit the overclock I want but i'll need more MHz later on in life especially when I get the 9970M.

What do you think guys? anyone have a 3840 OC'd fairly high?

Honestly I'd wait for the 3940xm to drop in price. No reason to go the extra mile when you can already overclock etc etc. Also the only reason I went to the 3840QM was because I had the 3610QM and I wanted to play around with the overclocking. In your case not a valid upgrade.

+1 from me. Just wait for the XM to drop in price and overclock to your hearts content. ;)

If I can get a cheap one then I totally will. 3920 3940XM won't matter at all as long as I get unlocked multiplyers and what not. does anyone know how far the 3840's multipliers go?

not sure, but I suppose if you run into the thermal barrier before your max your multipliers it would make sense to buy the 3840. I'm old school and haven't played with anything newer than sandybridge though so I can't really tell you one way or the other. :(

Sure do, starting up intel xtu, and .. each one is unlocked per 4 clicks in the overclocking directions. Meaning 4 Ghz on all cores is possible.

No need to grab the extreme edition then eh? Cause 4ghz will probably be hitting 90C at load right?

    Explain?
Not sure what you mean. My i7 3740 is capable of 43 41 39 39 multipliers via the bios and it pushed it to 3.77ghz on all cores via pushing the bclk up to 102.1

Careful with pushing the BCLK up, that can cause USB problems down the road. I believe Hackintoshihope meant that you are able to run all cores at 4ghz. ;)

You can get about 5% out of it, so almost an extra 200mhz, but each sample is quite different on this.

I recommend grabbing the 3920/40 XM as well. They are selling for approximately $435 on eBay right now. (Not sure, but you may need a triple-pipe heat sink.)

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Intel-Core-...est-/281125921297?pt=CPUs&hash=item4174692211

That's not a bad offer, if you ask me. I think the 3840QM is going for about $350 on eBay.

What everyone else is saying, I wouldn't even bother going from a 3740 to a 3820, the difference is so miniscule, 200mhz correct me if I'm wrong.

The 3940'S have dropped so much, as far as I can remember, ShirlyCPU is selling them for roughly $550, which is like 1/3rd of the price of the price from a few months ago.

    Go hard or go home!

There's a guy on the marketplace selling an ES sample 3720QM with fully unlocked multis and 8MB L3 Cache... in effect, a prototype 3920xm. I think it was around ~175$. Check it out. It apparently overclocks to high heavens.

Just for the hell of it, I'm gonna toss the idea of a 2960xm in the ring.....cheaper, runs cooler than Ivy and will work in an R2. Unlocked multipliers as well, and can be pushed pretty damned hard compared to a 39xx Extreme.....

INTEL SANDY BRIDGE i7 2960XM 2.7G(turbo 3.7G)OEM SR02F mobile CPU, Big sale. | eBay - last one left. At $388 for an OEM chip, it can't be bad.....especially when OEM 3840qm's are running at around the same price mark.

    Just a thought...

Oh, and with ANY Extreme cpu, you would require the triple pipe heatsink - otherwise it WILL overheat when pushed.

Don't think there is a triple heat sink available for the r3/r4. :(

I thought he did - wasn't sure if he still had it or not. It would be interesting to see how far he's gone with it and how it runs 24/7.

From what I've read, Haswell runs hotter than Ivy and Ivy runs hotter than Sandy. Don't know if the new 17 comes with the same triple pipe that the new 18 does for the 4930mx - it would be a massive blunder from Dell if they did not do this for the 17 too....
