I plan to skimp on upgrading the CPU now so that I can upgrade it later when IVY bridge comes out. Is it a good plan and will it work? I have heard and read the current SB chipset will be upgradeable with ivy cpus.

I'm more interested in if it is going to be compatible with new gpus...

It's supposed to be the same socket and with a bios update it should work with the r3.
Like killerbunny said, I really really really hope the new gpus will work in our r3...

Will M17x R3 receive any updates on the GPU like its big brother M18x which is rumoured to get new GPUs on June?

I pray we finally get 485m support. I mean, the 3d clevo with the 485m has been released, and with alienware supposed to be the premier gaming force in the industry and all...

That's the only gpu I think they would be getting; the 560m is also a possibility.

Or (this would be fantastic) a very slim chance, but the 580m

@OP, the ivy bridge update is "supposed" to be compatible, but it may require a new motherboard to implement the new features of ivy bridge, which dell would never do without releasing a refresh (aka m17x r4 and m18x r1/2)

Hope for the best (ivy bridge is compatible), but expect the worst (not so)

As KillerBunny alludes to, there is NO WAY Dell will be releasing an Ivy-bridge compatible bios for the m17 R3 since this would cut into their R4 sales. They're in fact more likely to try to prevent this somehow through a software or hardware complexity.
