Don't know if this has been solved already but in windows 10 on an Alienware 17 r5 ranger with a 120hz screen, after booting the machine, about half the time it will post and then start windows. The other half of the time it will post and just black screen forcing you to press and hold power button to kill power and try again. Anyone know why this happens and how to fix it, it was posted on AlienwareArena but never solved

Check the event viewer logs after it happens. When this happened in the preview builds it showed the nvidia driver constantly crashing and recovering. It only stops when I do a hard shutdown.

does the black screen happen after the windows loading is done or before that?
    120hz screen here

i have the black login screen issue, there is a 'fix' for it
press ctrl, it will bring the cursor to the password box, type your password and continue (all this on a blank screen)
and then it will bring you to the desktop

Just disable fast boot in "Control panel" - "Power supply"

Funny how many issues windows 10 has, I would be tempted to say Linux installs seem to go more smoothly by far
