Tried to install windows 10 today. Half way through the installer got a bsod from some display driver. Now I have to reinstall windows 8.1 from scratch because I can't get past the bios. Don't recommend upgrading yet

I have the 980m but haven't installed it cause I'm still waiting on the triple piped heatsink. Tried installing it with the old 770m. Trying upgrade again with a clean install of 8.1 and will reply how it goes

Windows 10 upgrade mostly went smooth for my ASUS N56DP and the only issues are a few driers for the touchpad and stuff, can't disable it from the fn keys and ASUS Smart Gestures (touchpad software) is broken so gestures don't work either. Installing a new version now so hope it works. Also I have a CPU upgrade and mine just worked fine. Maybe you guys are having a GPU driver issue. Try uninstalling drivers before upgrading might fix the problem (use a driver removal tool if nVidia has one).

Could you link that to me ghost? And it is just click and install or is it command line install. Clean install of 8.1 then upgrade to 10 worked for me now. Must of been a nvidia driver error because I upgraded to today's nvidia driver before I tried upgrading to windows 10 the first time

I just called Dell Premium support. They have a lot of Windows 10 upgrade issue by the users. So the operator suggests me to wait about one month before installing.

the nvidia forums have been buzzing that the latest driver for windows 10 is a bust. also clashes between windows update and geforce experience regarding updates. the windows 10 driver was only available via windows update, geforce experience could not recognise it and downgraded it
also the windows 10 drivers seem broken
    use the last working drivers

I attempted to install it but it wouldn't go all the way. Downloaded and started the process but it gets to about 44% then reboots back into windows 7.
The weird thing is I click on the windows 10 app down in taskbar and it says
    Reservation - Confirmed
Download - In Progress (Windows 10 is downloading in the background, we'll let you know when you can start the upgrade)
    Upgrade - Coming Soon

which did you flash? 9.0.30.xxxx or 9.1.xx.xxxx? i think you're supposed to use 9.0.30.xxxx as 9.1 is considered a separate branch.

That would be amazing if they would finally push a new update with fixed fan tables, but I doubt it. They need to have a class action lawsuit to get them to do anything. Kind of sucks how they just killed support for it and now we have to use out of date drivers or find them on our own

i tried booting from a USB with UEFI and it didn't work for me and i used Rufus to do the ISO to USB thing. the only thing that worked was to use an ODD.

Anyone know where I get a functioning Windows 10 driver for a M17xR3 with an aftermarket 680m? I've spent my entire afternoon, downloading and testing drivers.

I don't want to give up after spending this much time, and only having this one thing standing in my way. But it sort of affects even my ability to even effectively use my laptop for reading and such. And well, I've gotten the occasional lockup and crash due to just having Microsoft's generic VGA drivers installed.

Update: Or an .inf file that will work for existing drivers that are available? Because I don't think I have too many more drivers to try. And unless I've misread anything, I don't think I have too many pre-existing .inf files either.

It's currently on 353.62. I'm not sure if that's a GeForce Experience driver or one that came with windows 10 (or an update).

Driver and modded .inf from http://laptopvideo2go.com for 353.62 worked just fine for Windows 10 Pro. Of all the stupid things, I decided not to do because I never had any issues with it with Windows 7 when installing modded drivers, was to Disable Driver Signature Enforcement.

So seems Microsoft is wanting to play "hardball" with a lot things trying to increase security and reduce vulnerabilities in their new OS. Which means legitimate developers are going to have to work harder to keep up to provide their customers with the latest drivers. Or consumers are just going to have to be smarter and have to trust their developers.

I installed Windows 10 via the media tool Microsoft provided. I only did it that way because my windows updates would keep failing at installing windows 10. I also got the BSOD because of the NVIDIA driver. I just wish there was a clear cut way to do this.

I clean installed Windows 10 and it installed every driver I needed except the chipsets. At least I think that's what happened. I'm kind of forced to go to windows 10 now because I'll either get flooded with windows 10 failed or windows update keeps acting like there is an update to install but it never installs.

Does anyone know what to do regarding drivers with a clean install of Windows 10?

not sure what all drivers you might be having problems with, there was a thread that linked to a techinferno page about installing the extreme tuning utility (ive never used) but i followed it cause someone said it also helps installing nvidia drivers and mentioned something about the OSD. i dont know if i didnt install all the visual studio redist packages or if i didnt need to do anything other than do Fn + F7 to enable the nvidia graphics but i did follow their guide for my m17x r4 and it seems to all work except i dont have the OSD still and the command center button doesnt work (not a big deal).

caveat: i cant say my system is stable though, over night it rebooted and reset the alienFX and i have a secondary hard drive that has decided to start failing on me.

heres the link to the thread that i was talking about http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/windows-10-xtu-can-not-install.778174/page-3#post-10052592 hope it helps

The problems I have with Windows 10 with my m17xr4:
    - The Synaptics touchpad driver it auto installs with Windows update is rubbish and keeps freezing my touchpad.
    - None of my 2 audio jacks work properly. The middle 1 doesn't work at all. The bottom 1 plays audio out of the jack and out of the speakers at the same time lol.
    - Battery is empty much faster. Also it says it takes 2 minutes to recharge from 5% to 100% clearly wrong.

Problem is I can't install an older driver because Windows update will just override it next restart. Don't feel like completely turning Windows update off either considering it's a new OS and probably some important stuff coming through.

Any1 else with these problems? Any solutions found?

Solution to both of these problems:
Disable driver updates from Windows update - Clrl+x and press Y, then Advanced system settings, hardware, device installation settings and check boxes on 'No, let me choose what to do' and 'Never install driver software from Windows update'. This should stop overwriting your drivers.
--Download Windows 8.1 audio driver start the installation. It will offer repair the driver, which is the best option if you upgraded from Windows 8.1.
--Install Windows 8.1 Synaptics driver from Dell website

Even after restart Windows 10 will not overwrite your drivers and both sound and touchpad should work fine.

well i was writing up what the last guy said but yeah that is pretty much what i did, i was coming from windows 7 though (but still had the 8.1 driver installed) and i did reinstall that driver as well in windows 10. that should give you the soundblaster control panel as well, if it doesnt, uninstall that, then install the windows 8.0 version and then do the 8.1 over that, i know i had installed one audio driver only to find that it didnt include the application with it but i dont recall exactly what ones i did do.

as for touch pad, try what he said, i use an external more than anything so the one windows installed seems fine (hell it even auto disables with the external mouse which is more than what i got with the driver in windows 7)

There is a setting to disable the touchpad when the mouse is attached. I did the upgrade from Windows 8.1 though, not 7. Basically, all you do is uninstall the GPU driver before the upgrade if you are using modded drivers. Do the upgrade and only re-install the audio drivers. The rest of the drivers from Windows 8.1 are working fine. Then, install the new modded driver for the GPU. That is if your GPU is not officially supported (if you need modded drivers).

yea even with the option to disable touch pad ticked in windows 7 it wasnt working right, sometimes it would be always disabled and other times it wouldnt disable. i didnt have to use modded drivers myself (but did have to enable discreet with Fn+F7 at the least if not more) and i did the fresh install but do not wipe the drive. everything seems to work for me except the OSD application (it runs but pressing buttons doesnt bring up the images and the command center button doesnt work) but its not a big deal for me right now.

i don't mind the touchpad driver being installed as alien touch / tactx can still disable it when a usb mouse is connected.

Are you installing this driver as seen in my device manager? And then Windows still re-installs MS driver on top of this even though you turned off driver installation from Windows update?
    w10tp.jpg

On the other hand, my drivers were older than this. So it seems MS updated the driver for me too, but left the same Synaptics software. My touchpad does not freeze, but I use my external mouse more often then the touchpad.

Also you can change the touchpad delay as seen below - different settings might improve the usability of the touchpad:

I didn't install the touchpad driver myself, I let windows install it and it came with he synaptics software. I'm noticing a freeing with but I'm seeing other freezing with my usb mouse that happens occasionally but only for a second before it resumes and that's usually after a consent window (UAC) pops up.

Download Windows 8.1 audio driver, start the installation. It will offer repair the driver/software - choose that. Works fine for me, has the usual SB panel.
