    Hey Guise,

I ran the windows 7 assessment, and I got a score for my hard drive that seems a bit low.

Is anyone else running a single 256GB SSD from Dell (Samsung)?

    here are my scores:

if any of my other scores seem too low for my specs (in my signature) let me know.

    Thanks

    Hi Zenith

Because more people have traditional hard drives the index is scewed in favour of them. 5.9 is common with SSD. The index is slanted and I don't think it recognizes the differences between SSD and HD. Both my SSD score the same as you and both are blazing fast compared to 7200.

Have read some good articles about this but are having trouble finding the posts. Vista I think has a base score of 1-5.9 and Windows 7 has a base score between 1-7.9 for hard drive.

My 80 GB SSD scores a 7.7 on Windows 7. My lowest score is 7.0 for the i7 processor, making my overall score 7.0 I think your ssd should score high, if it does well on the Windows test. Maybe there is something wrong with the Dell SSD.

The WEI is always determined by the lowest subscore which is almost always the hard drive. But hard drive alone doesn't have much meaning on gaming experience. The WEI is just another tool to help M sell more software. My other SSD is on a Falcon. It has a similar rank as Dells.

Here is a good comparison of HDD vs SSD

Yah so the problem is that our SSD drives have degraded in performance

I have a Dell Samsung TRIM enabled SSD and it scores around a 7.3 in the WEI. Check the SSD Benchmark thread and make sure you have your system optimized for SSD. things like system restore, and all the other stuff that works for an HDD can degrade performance on an SSD.

Here is a link to help identify which Dell SSD have Windows Trim support. "The factory installation of the IRST driver 9.6 will begin on May 19, 2010. The Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver revision 9.5 or older did not support the TRIM function. This was an industry wide issue, not a Dell specific issue. If you got the old version drive, it cannot support TRIM even with new firmware, because it is different based on NAND flash technology."

    Hi Zenith

Most Dell SSD users have a version that is not compatible with Trim. Neither of my two Samsung SSD cards can be updated. The reason is they use a different technology that doesn't support trim. First off make sure that your card does support Trim. Those Samsung cards which do qualify for Trim will be wiped clean of data in the process of the update so you must back up before hand. This process will also wipe out your partition so you need special instructions from Alienware to back this up. Go to your brand of card and check what their exact instructions are. I suspect many people with non trim supported SSD are doing to try this driver accidently. What bothers me about that link is that their is no mention of Alienware which leads me to suspect they did not ship those cards with your Alienware M17x. If you have confirmed you do have one of those cards and are still unclear I would call technical support for detailed instructions.

     Intel(R) Rapid Storage Technology

try this link it didnt erase my drive and hasnt improved my wei score either

download crystaldiskinfo that will tell you if your drive supports trim before doing any firmware updates
