Did you upgrade to Windows 8 or did you do a clean installation?

Osd not working for me on my M17XR4 too after trying your method on a windows 8 upgrade. All functions working just not the alienware osd picture or logo popping out.

Something could have gone wrong during the upgrade, if possible I'd recommend a Clean Installation.

Still not working for me, I'm giving up and hope Dell devotes more resources to getting their software to work properly with Win 8.

When you say it is running perfectly do you mean it does not only work but also show you the animations when you press, say eject key?

I did a fresh Windows 8 Pro install, installed all the drivers for W8 as per here. I did not install Command Centre and OSD until did all the steps to enable Net Framework Luis suggested, restarted PC and installed Command centre and then OSD. It still does not work properly - volume keys, mute, play buttons, wifi and command centre buttons are working fine, but eject is not working. There are no OSD icons I used to have in Windows 7 except for volume, but those are Windows 8 default and were there even without OSD installed.

Thanks OP for the info - I've still got the problem though.

All the buttons work except the Dell button (plus no Dell style graphics i.e. the volume). I did a clean Win 8 Pro 64 install, enabled .NET 3.5 (selected everything within it) and installed the latest OSD version. Still not working for the Dell button.

I'm giving up, hopefully Dell fixes with a newer version that is Win 8 compatible.

Btw, since i the OSD is failing to launch in Windows 8, is there an alternative way (or key combo) of turning on/off the keyboard backlight?

you should just be able to left click on the alienware command center icon in the taskbar and click go dark. That should shut them off. ;)

This is the problem, the Command Center icon in the tasktray isn't showing, however, when I go to Task Manager, the Alienware On-Screen Display (32-bit) is running in the background...

The F11 key has Alien FX, but hitting it (FN + F11) doesn't do anything either...

I reinstalled command center and it works now (Alien FX). However, OSD still doesn't quite work in Win8 - thta is all the buttons work but utilizes the Windows graphics rather than the Dell

Hi everyone, I recently bought an M14x r2 and did a clean upgrade to Windows 8 but i am having trouble with this OSD thing. I read through the forums extensively and found that the order mattered in which you install command center and the osd so i did a complete uninstall and reinstall (with the correct order) and it does work but with mixed results. The windows 8 osd icons seem to be still showing up and the alienware seems to be afk.

    Windows 8 icons.JPG

Most of the fn + keys still work except the Eject button for the dvd drive and the media keys ( ie |<<, >/||, and >>| buttons). I am half tempted to go back to windows 7 just to get everything working but this problem seems so minor that I would like to see this fixed. :). I've attached a snippet of the osd icon im seeing. I would really like some help here and believe me i've poured through this forum before posting. Thanks to all in advance

I also did an upgrade to Win8 on my M15X. OSD works fine for me, but i do get the win8 icons as well. Not really a big issue in fact that the M15X drivers are not the newest ones :)

Same thing here. I upgraded my R3 from Windows 7 to Windows 8 first, and a lot of things were not completely functional. After doing a clean installation instead, everything works perfectly. The icons are fully animated with any button push.

Yup, sama here. Animated and all functional. But not using from link from the page 1. The only thing that doesn't work is brightness control when using discrete graphic card. But the animation is pop up even the brightness setting is not change. And also the volume control doesn't work if you press it during playing the game. It's working fine if you go back to desktop.....

Wow... well i did a clean install for windows 8 but i'm curious as what the heck i screwed up. I guess i can start over again. Any suggestions for me?

Edit: Just thought of something. Does UEFI have anything to do with my osd not working properly? When formatting i did the legacy option in windows 8.

I have found that removing the nivida driver solves this problem for me. It's temporary and not really worth it, but I do it to get my HDMI In port to function properly. I think both issue may be related with the Nvidia Driver.

Currently on the new alienware 17 r5. since day one it's showing the windows 8 build in OSD instead of the alienware OSD

I have a M14X R1 and after upgrading to Windows 8 last year, I could never get the Eject, Command Ctr, and Alien Fx keys to work. Also, I got only the Windows 8 icons for the other keys. However, just recently I was able to fix that. I uninstalled the OSD app, rebooted, installed the original OSD app (ver A00), and rebooted. Everything is working except the Command Center button. And the Alienware icons also pop up. However, for the brightness buttons (and maybe the sound buttons, I cannot recall), the Windows 8 icons as well as the Alienware icons are popping up. But at least things are working. I am currently using version 2.8.10.0, A02 of the Alienware Command Center. Version 2.8.8.0 also worked as described above. Perhaps restoring the original Command Center may restore the functioning of the Command Center key but I'm going to let this go.

Never got OSD to work since Windows 8 was installed. Now with Windows 8.1, I tried for the sake of it again today and OSD still does not work.

Aside from the OSD not displaying (which is cosmetic) the Play button doesn't work after loading an audio CD. I need to use media player to start playing the CD, but once it's running the Pause/Play function does work if you need it.

I read above that it could be the nVidia drivers, but nah, I'd have to call out DELL/Alienware for garbage drivers and support on this persistent issue.

Sorry for the necro, seemed fitting to use this instead of creating a new one.

More over the Win8/ 8.1 /8.1.1 all are crap they tend to have high DPC latency, I've tried every possiblility and same result plus OSD doesn't work at all...
Since then I upgraded to Win7 and running Nospheratu's OSD mod ;).
Hope the dell drivers will be patched soon for 8 and up...
