    Hey guys!

So recently I decided to partition my hard drive and restor the factory image (from when I first got my Alienware 17 2013) via AlienRespawn. After I have done so, everything seems to boot just fine, however, everytime my computer tries to install windows updates, I get an error code 800b0100.

I have contacted Microsoft support and have done their troubleshooting and resetting windows update componentz which haven't worked. I'Ve also called Alienware tech support and they keep trying to charge me 120 dollars for help. I also tried to order a windows 7 home premium disc from deep bUT it's been such a huge hassle to get it after orderING 2 times in the past month and multiple calls to dell about getting my order (of a simple disc.) In fact my recent order of the disc still says it was supposed to come 2 days ago and it still hasn't shipped.

I don't necessarily need the disc if I can get windows updates to work but at this point, I might have to clean install.

Please help alienware representatives (in my order or the windows updates) and people in the windows updates problem.

    Thanks.

Did you try all steps here?:

I personally would just reformat. You can try creating a USB boot drive by using the microsoft tool:
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/windows-usb-dvd-download-tool

This would ensure you start with a clean OS (no corrupted system files etc..) Just make sure you extract your product/license key first. If it's not on a label on the bottom of your laptop, you will need to use a tool to get it off Windows BEFORE formatting.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. I have tried everything from the link and I cannot download windows 7 home premium onto my usb via Microsoft as I have an oem key and not a retail key (being that I have an Alienware.) The only way is getting a disc from deep which they've been complicated in providing. The only real solution I have at the moment is to upgrade, then clean install windows 10.

In addition, when flashing factory image I'm pretty sure formatting was part of the process if I wasn't mistaken.

It's been a while since I updated an old Windows 7 build on anything, but I do recall this kind of error occuring when trying to go through Windows Update, and the solution was to download the Windows 7 SP1 update directly from MS and install it locally.

Here is a similar complaint with some debugging/fixing solutions, instead of download SP1 from Microsoft, which I see is no longer available except through Windows Update:

Here is Windows 7 SP1 from CNET download:

    Hey man

You need to pay attention to something! While windows 10 is a "free" upgrade for users of windows 7 and 8.1, the focus is on "upgrade". You will NOT be able to do a clean install using the "upgrade" key of Windows 10.
You will be able to go through with the installation but Windows will show as deactivated and you will get some error/warning when trying to use your key... You will need a brand new license key if you plan to do a clean installation of Windows 10... Which M$ makes it easy to do via the Windows Store...

In all cases I strongly recommend everyone to have a genuine retail key for the very reason you're trying to accomplish here: clean installation of Windows.
I don't trust cloning softwares, system restore etc... If things REALLY do go wrong, I format my drive and do a clean install of the OS. With SSD's and fast internet, it takes less than an hour to get Windows and every single application I use installed.

Hey man, thanks for the reply but I've actually read on Microsoft FAQ on upgrading to windows 10 and from a Microsoft technical support agent themselves that you can reinstall after upgrade.

But agreed on the retail key. I'm actually contemplating n whether it's worth to buy a windows 7 retail key to reinstall windows 7 or do windows 10 for free.

Never trusting restores for sure. Screwed up my windows updates but otherwise, I would've been fine.

Trust me, you won't be able to clean install. What M$ calls reinstalling is using the refresh/reset function in win10
