Hey guys... This happened to me on more than one occasion... I have an M17x R4 and I'm stuck with the original graphics drivers because of this issue... Every time I try to install new graphics drivers, after it starts installing and it requires a restart, the windows restarts but then fails to load and offers me to go to system repair, which I do and then after looking for a fix, tells me to do a system restore, which gives me my windows back, but with old drivers... I tried a lot of different versions of drivers but the problem always occurs.
I hope somebody can give me a fix to this, because my GTX 660m is supposed to be running games from 2005 with no lag whatsoever.

    Thanks,
    Rudy

Try the latest beta from nvidia, maybe you won't be affected by the black screen at reboot ;)

I've always been told by reps if you want all functions to be operable stay with their drivers from their webpage. And yes I know they are old. :(

    Hi Hack,

Sorry to hear about your problems. My guess is that you have a messed up registry value somewhere. I would use CCleaner to remove everything from the system after you uninstall the old drivers. And some people on here may know of better programs. Otherwise, and I know this is extreme, but i personally would re-install windows from a clean image and not the alienware image. then you can use the official nvidia drivers. unfortunatly, there is no clear path at this point on how you can get the newer drivers to work for you. I personaly have AMD, and it isnt always the same process to get drivers working. Keep experimenting, clean your vents, etc. Keep us posted! :)

seems like a strange issue. Only heard of those types of issues with AMD cards. Are you sure you are installing the correct drivers?

I tried both the latest driver from NVidia and the latest driver offered by AW. Neither worked. I've also been trying this with pretty much every driver release since I got my laptop last September.

You know, I haven't really unistalled the old drivers... I assumed the installer would do so automatically... Maybe it isn't and that's causing a conflict?
Can somebody please link me to a good tutorial on how to completely unistall GPU drivers please?

    I would try driver sweeper.

    Guru3D - Driver Sweeper

its pretty simple to follow. make sure you reboot. If this doesnt help you, reload in windows safe mode after cleaning the old drivers and then apply the new ones whilst in safe mode.

Follow the steps here. As far as i know, when you install a new set of drivers it upgrades your existing set of drivers with updated dll's files etc. If during installation it prompts you to do a clean install then it will remove the old drivers and install the new ones, just to be sure uninstall the drivers from the control panel or using CC cleaner, then reboot and reinstall them again. hope that helps.

AMD operates differently, to get optimus's full functionality you have to stay with default.
