I'm currently running CCC 11.8 and when I get into combat the framerate occasionally drops to about 5-10 FPS and the sound gets real grainy ONLY in intense battle sequences when a lot of things are going on. Anyone know what this might be? I deleted my cache and called Blizzard, but they didn't suggest anything useful.

Try running on the dx9 API.

mmm i'm running 11.8 and no issues at all. granted i'm on 6970's..
i play the game on ultra settings.
But before the upgrade i was playing it with my 5870s an no issues neither (besides the fact that the game is becoming too boring... always the same stuff served on a different way... i hope that swtor will come out soon)
may be throttling? check your cpu temperatures, by my understanding wow is a cpu bound game, if cpu throttle the game will suffer consequences. I sugest you use hwinfo32 to monitor your sensors
Edit: also for zoolian982's comment i don't believe is the case. 5870's should run the game almost flawlessly, maybe not with shadow and water on ultra but in high. -

Do you have the latest CAP for your ATI driver version? Have use tried the current Dell drivers just to see if looks better? Are you running this on crossfire or a single card? When did u last clean ur vid drivers and reinstall?
After you have it fixed to where it is somewhat normal I would also in addition play with the config file of wow. Have you changed your processAffinityMask settiing before?
For i7 procs it should be at least set to the following in WoW.
SET processAffinityMask "85" by doing this it will tell WoW to use all 4 physical cores. Another setting i7 users often use is SET processAffinityMask "255". That setting will tell WoW to use all 8 threads, including the 4 additional hyper threading threads.
I personally find that the "85" setting seems to run the game more smooth. This setting will mostly be noticed in raids and in populated towns. WoW taxes the cpu higher when dealing with calculating many other "Players". Using the processAffinityMask setting will bring up your FPS in highly populated areas.
Hope this helps too -
I've been running WoW on the DX11 API since it was testing in beta during early wrath, I've never had any issues. What WoW is quite well known for having issues with is Crossfire/SLI. WoW does not handle multiple GPUs well at all. All of the WoW tech support people will tell you to run single GPU in WoW on multiple GPU systems if you experience any issues.
From recent experience with the latest Catalyst drivers, I wouldnt go with the beta drivers until they get officially released. My desktop with a 5870 and my AW laptop with the 6870 are running stable on 11.5. The machine I have with the 4850 has a fit if I run on anything over 11.4.
Also, head on over to the WoW tech forums, I know a number of people that even Blizzard's techs look to for help over there and they are quite knowledgeable. Some of which include the software writers for antimalware programs such as combofix (which was initially written to rid systems specifically of malware that targets WoW).
You may have to sift through a lot of junk over there, but there is a lot of good information too.
Of course, do the due diligence: run your av/antispyware/antimalware. check your temps, and stop running beta drivers. Once you've done all that, then start looking deeper. -

i'm not agree with the above. with newer patches there is no necessity to set affinity mask manually. Also, i use dx11 from when they were introduced in the game and never had a problem, and crossfire work well (both gpu@100% load)

I agree you do not "have" to set the process affinity mask, but you can if you want to. It's purely user preference. I set mine to 85 on my desktop and my laptop because I prefer to run on the 4 physical cores. It also allows for turbo boost to give it a little more juice rather than running on all 8 HT cores which it will do by default.
But, crossfire is still known to cause issues in some setups, just because yours runs great, doesnt mean that's the case for everyone. WoW is well known to have crossfire/sli issues, even with the current release. -
Actually thats not totally true.. new wow does set the affinity but its not always set for the proc u have or on its best setting. On this current patch when I set it to 85 my FPS in a populated area goes up. soo dunno.
About DX11 I wish I can run it. I dont have problems persay when I try and run it but for some reason the fps doesnt seem as smooth. I guess I can mess with it again.
