you want to get the base config but with 7970m and the 1080p screen. Leave everything else alone. Then upgrade for a fraction yourself later. Dell charges an arm and a leg for Ram and HDD/SSD upgrades

I agree it was overpriced, but it's not like the seller was gauging you at that price.

The same specs from Dell would have cost more, so in that sense, cheaper.... But it also wasn't a killer deal, as pointed out.

Wow, that guy made about $800 profit, assuming he bought it from AAFES.

And assuming he did not, he would have lost $500 (if I priced out the order on the Dell Canada website, I could not get it for cheaper than $3000 with taxes).

I didn't buy it from him, but I just am irked by the conception that he was making a killing. Maybe he was, but it's not like he was ripping people off (except maybe Dell)

If you call Dell with your config and haggle, you could have gotten it for a better price than if you would configure and just bought.

As far as him making or losing money. It all depends on what he paid for it. Also, what was the reasoning for him selling it? The R4 is what? 2 months old? Maybe it was stolen, or perhaps he's having major issues with it and doesn't want to go through Dell to get it fixed. Just seems a bit odd to sell it. Then again, maybe he wants an m18x or something?

I'm sure you could get a better price, but even if that's true, it doesn't take away from my point.

I'm not saying it's not odd for him to sell it - it is... however, I'm just saying it's not like - at $2,600 - his goal was to blatantly rip people off.

    $2600 seems high...i mean u could go dual 7970 on m18x base i7, with 8gb ram, 500hdd + 32sata,+blue ray a better option?

Take a look at the bids, it's not like he chose to sell it at that price. It's a matter of how much those people were actually willing to pay, which is a high amount considering what you guys pointed out - the R4 being a couple of months old, the fact that it could be used // faulty etc..

The seller did make some good money off of that (if he upgraded it himself) and he obviously wanted that high winning bid, but its not like you can blame him for the final price - its what people were willing to bid - which was a bit much in my opinion.. guess that's the way auctions work :/

Looks fairly Legit to me, and the price is not bad considering it has 8gigs of ram, a 750gig hdd, 7970m, 1080p screen.... But then this is ebay lol

Contact the seller (who seems to have very good feedback) and ask some questions. That's what I always do before I buy something on ebay - keep in touch with the seller.

PS -I think I came across this myself haha, but I'll leave it to what the others would like to say on this matter. My advice; shoot him an email

Agree. For example, it lacks the mSATA SSD which was a key requirement for me.

    eBay.com Item Bid History

LOL. Gotta love it when you're bidding on an Item and you lose to some guy who only places 1 bid. I feel their pain XD

While that's true that it doesn't have the Msata options, it also has custom thermal compound addition, which is really cheap. I built the 2 same laptops, one on BTOtech and one on the main dell website.
    Dell was 1,974 (before tax/shipping)
    BTO was 1904 (with tax/shipping)
The BTO build also had IC diamond compound for CPU + GPU and was cheaper.

But back to the Msata. Dell wants an extra $75 just for a 32gb Msata....which is half the price on newegg. the ONLY important things you need in an M17xR4 is the 1080p screen, the AMD 7970 (or other card if you prefer) and then the cheapest on every other thing so you can upgrade it yourself for alot cheaper.

You're ignoring the value of time, though. By getting an mSATA from Dell, the Windows OS is installed there, saving me the time of installing it. This has value.

Honestly, after researching websites online, BTOtech so far has THE cheapest price for an M17xR4 with
    3610qm processor
    IC diamond compound
    1080p 1920x1080 screen
    AMD HD7970m
    8GB DDR3 1600mhz
    750gb 7200rpm HDD
    802.11A/B/G/N Wireless Card

all for $300 cheaper than dell. Sketchy? or is it worth doing it?

The lack of a Killer Wireless Card sucks. As does, I maintain, the lack of an mSATA drive.

That's true, but if you're buying a new laptop, putting windows onto a sata isn't very hard to do. While I know some people don't like messing with their computers, I like being able to customize my rig, so the time and work is definitely worth saving money.

They do have a Bigfoot Killer wireless 1103 + 3rd Antenna
But I built it based on what I wanted, which was plugged into ethernet.

buying a wireless upgrade is definately the biggest waste of money...its a 2 min switch and you can save 50% or more by buying it yourself
