About 2 weeks ago it stopped "automatically" hibernating. I checked the settings in command center and it's supposed to hibernate after 30 minutes, but it doesn't anymore. I have all the latest drivers and BIOS (10.) I can put it into hibernation myself okay... but it was nice knowing it would just do it.
Any ideas???
Thanks
Sandy

try the hard reset -
With system powered off (shutdown),
1. Remove AC Power
2. Remove Battery
3. Depress and hold power button for a 20 count
4. Reattach battery and AC power
5. Boot up the system
If that doesn't work, set hibernate for 15 mins. Test with that. Still an issue? Try disabling hibernation and reboot. Reboot again and then re-enable.

Thanks BatBoy for your response... I have done several searches on hibernation, but found nothing like what I am experiencing.
I will try all of your suggestions and post back.
Thanks so much - it's always nice to have things to try !!

Use power options...turn it to 0 (never turn off) then back to 30 minutes. Should resolve.

A shot in the dark here, but make sure Steam is not running in the background.
-
Yeah, make sure you don't have any program that either accesses the net, or by itself inhibits a standby running.
Such programs include:
Steam
uTorrent
Web DivX players (such as on icefilms)
VLC media player
Other media players
Any of these will prevent a standby. -
Cant speak to the others but I've had steam running in the task tray and have been able to suspend or hibernate without issue. I think the OP's hibernation file is just funky and needs to be reset. regardless, good info there... +1.

Thank so much for all the helpful tips!
To start I guess I should have said "sleep" not hibernate... as it first has to sleep. I have messed around in Command Center changing the sleep/hibernate settings and rebooting - then used BatBoy's link and changed the sleep settings from Windows and rebooting. But still nothing. I also checked my start up menu to make sure nothing new or odd is running like the mentioned Steam, etc. I don't have a lot on the start up menu.
I seems like something is running... but I don't know what. When I look at the task manager I don't see anything odd.
This started about 2 weeks ago when I put a Microsoft Exchange account through Outlook. Don't know if that is related or not - but thought I would mention it.
Thanks again for all the tips... I will keep plugging away at this.

So tell me again, you have sleep set for 30 mins of inactivity, right?
-
Yes, sorry - I believe I should have said sleep - sleep is set for 30 minutes of inactivity.
I am confused by the terms... but normally if I don't do anything, the screen will eventually darken after a few minutes - then the keyboard will go dark and the system will sleep. Whatever that is - it's not happening. The screen will go dark, but the keyboard is lit up and the comuter is running. If I want it to go down I have to hit FN F1 and do so myself...
Thanks for your patience with my learning curve here... I attached a print screen of my power settings.
I just hit "restore defaults" and am going to restart - maybe that will kick it in...

Are you using the Dell 8.763 AMD Driver for your 5870's? Did you update the 5870 VBIOS with the dell released update? Both the driver and the VBIOS addressed sleep and resume issues.

Also, Take a look at this Microsoft KB -
Windows 7 does not go to sleep
I do not suggest changing the display driver to the Microsoft Reference one - ever. So if prompted at any time, do not do this. -
I also ran a Systems Diagnostic Report and got an error message for
"FastAccess Video Capture"
It's disabled for some reason so I went to Device Manager and enabled it... who knows - maybe that will do something... -
I will check out the link there - and thanks for the heads up on the display driver!! -
I checked out the link... I have everything right. I also have the latest drivers for everything. I will contact Dell and see if they have any suggestions. Will report back...
I gave BatBoy a rep and he gave others a rep - so this thread was a rep for all! Thanks for all the helpful links/tips... hopefully Dell will have something worthy to offer - but really, that would be a first. Been there done that.

Before I call Dell and waste my time I think I will try the following...
I use Acronis and I have an aged image backup that is about a month old (before this ever occurred.) I could restore that back... would take some work to get the data and any installs back to today. See if that takes care of whatever went wrong... -
I restored it back to an image made in early January - and in 15 minutes it was nap time... just like a baby.
Shows the value of aged backups.
I will pay attention as I add back - so if this does happen again, I will know the cause.
Thanks so much for the replies - I always learn a lot from everybody here!

Glad its worked out now... those windows os bugs can be tough to troubleshoot. Especially one like this. You may never know what caused it. As others have mentioned, with the sleep timeout, its looking for inactivity. If there is something running which is spiking activity, be it comm traffic or other, it will most likely prevent it. Interesting though. Post back if you ever track it down.

I found out I have not done much to the system since that date. I know it was not the recent Windows updates because it was happening before that. The only thing I have done is put that Microsoft Exchange account (hosted exchange) through Outlook. Hopefully that is not causing something.
I am hoping it was just a bug thing - which, as you mentioned, can happen and be very hard to pinpoint.
Hopefully you won't hear from me again
Sandy -
Easiest way to confirm, setup the exchange account again and see if it happens again. -
But at least by restoring back I got it to sleep now when Outlook is closed. I have run several hosted exchang trials - which could have caused a problem (deleting/creating accounts) so restoring back before I did any of this, was a good idea.
It has something to do with the connection to Microsoft exchange when Outlook is running... will post back when I figure this out.
Sandy -
Disregard... at 5:00pm it slept with Outlook still running.
Woooo Hooooo!!! no more "research" needed. Praise God!
Over and out on this problem...
Hoping everybody has a good "trouble shooting" free weekend!
