I haven't seen anybody else complain but the "Soft Touch" case is a dust and particle and fingerprint magnet. It is cheap looking and just blah. Alienware has always been the best of the best with gorgeous products! I can't believe Dell has taken such a class act and downgraded it so badly. Very disappointed!
Returning mine. Perhaps if they change the form factor in the next iteration, I will consider purchasing it again.

that's your idea dude...

"With great power, comes great responsibility. "
Have u ever thought of that?
You got the power of this beast in your hands, so its your responsibility to take care of it, clean it.
Besides, i admire the soft touch. It isn't cheap looking at all. but is classy looking. -
"haven't seen anyone else complain" That's because it doesn't exist
You've purchased the rig, waited on the build, and now going to get rid of it because you didn't research it before paying a few grand
Sorry to hear that.

Soft touch is much better than cheap plastic. The M17x R3 is plastic to reduce weight and keep the keyboard area cooler than if it was metal. To make it still seem like a nice machine they used soft touch, I like it.
Honestly, after a few weeks of use you will get a nice coat of finger grease on the entire laptop, and then you won't be able to notice the difference anymore. It is just from the factory that it is totally clean it is very noticeable. -
One wipe with a micro-fiber cloth cleans the whole darned laptop.

Please show us the HIGHER quality computer you find. I had a previous laptop the components were nice but it felt like very cheap tyco toy plastic. The Soft Touch feel of the Alienware is extremely nice compared to most.
-
I'm still awaiting the arrival of my beast, but I have messed around with a basic m17x r3 at Comp USA and I have to say I really liked the feel of it. I've heard of some complaints online, but before my purchase I made sure I was satisfied with the new build. Granted, I would prefer an all metal case, but with that you run into more weight.

Thats one reason I love my Silver R2 Chasis. It's purty ♥ ♥ ♥

In my opinion, only a case made full entirely of aluminum (not only the outsides) is the best to improve heat disipation and even sturdiness.
But I am not dissapointed with my R3. -
Perhaps I didn't explain well. I have an XPS M1730 that I have gamed on for close to 5 years. IMHO, it is the finest laptop case ever built and it breaks my heart that the components are now so outdated and unable to be upgraded.
So, I went looking for a new laptop. The local Best Buy has very few laptops and no gaming ones. None on display had the soft touch surface so I had no way of knowing exactly what that meant.
Of course I have thought of cleaning it. I am rather OCD about my iPad so I understand the need for microfiber cloths. It wasn't the cleaning I objected to, it was the feel of the surface!
To Graz't: DudeEss here. And of course it was my opinion, that 's why I posted it.
As an aside, I also hate the new chiclet keys that are being used now so that was another reason for the return.
I honestly don't know if I will ever find the "perfect case" again, but for $2000, I want to really like what I buy and so I will keep searching.
Cheers everybody! -
i don't have a problem with the soft touch but they need to ditch the plastic and go back to aluminum. r3 case feels cheap compared to M15x or M17x-r2 or M18x imo.

I guess it's just different strokes for different folks. I LOVE the keyboard on the R3. I think the case is fine. I think it's sturdy and well designed. I don't think I would care if it was shiny or coated with the rubberized stuff. My Asus has the same rubber coating although it's a lighter shade of black. It looks as good as it did when I bought it. I have some of those antifog wipes you get for glasses. Tear one those open and wipe it down once a month and it looks brand new again. (Those wipes have a light solution of Alcohol and water.)
I wish the keyboard didn't touch the screen but other than that I have no complaints about the engineering or design choices for the R3. -
I agree entirely with Zali here. The R3 is a huge step back in quality. Face it: it's a bad finish, and that's all there is to it. Just because you paid a lot for it doesn't make it good. I'd much prefer an aluminium chassis.

as far as the m17x go i will have to say the overall build is a step back. they went from 2 gpu support to a single gpu support giving the m18x the old look and the dual graphics support. i do like the overall build very well even though its a step back. i actually like the soft touch better than the aluminum look anyway.

Build one model and try some things out, then build another keeping all the good points
-
@Zali, sorry for the misunderstanding (had the worst day for a long while), I was just meaning I absolutely love the soft touch feeling, especially while typing, and I think r3 is a very good build quality laptop compared to many others (not if all), anyway, tastes are different for everybody, good luck for your search for new laptop!

I really like the soft touch and the weight is a plus. It's such a dust magnet though... Dunno if it's my house but the laptop seems to attract an inordinate amount of dust.

LOL... new slogan!
M17X, who needs a maid?!
Game. Kill. And collect all the dust you can (+25XP per dust ball collected). -
Add that to the Marketing materials..
"Alienwares new 'soft touch' coating not only helps you keep a firm grip on your laptop but helps remove contaminates from the environment" -
