As it's the r4 not the new r5 i was wondering what you guys think, taking into consideration the basic r5 = £1300 (haswell,765m etc)

    Alienware M17x R4
i7-3740QM Processor (6M Cache, up to 3.70 GHz with Turbo Boost 2.0)
    12GB
500 Gb SATA Hard Drive (7200 RPM)
    2 GB GDDR5 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M
    (1920x1080) WLED screen
    DVD+/-RW Drive
    Killer Wireless-N 1103

    for £1250

what do you guys think on spec/price/model/future potential

That seems worth it to me. I just picked up a 7970m r4 as they are hell of a lot cheaper than the new model and have much better performance than the 765m
I also prefer the look of the r4

Looks good, although personally I would want a blu-ray drive as I use mine quite a lot.

Agree, that is a very good config for the price and you can go higher on the GPU later, just takes a little work as it won't be just 'plug-n-play'. From what I see the 780 in the new model is not a killer upgrade over the 680 anyway. My 675 (even in 3D) is still good enough for me so I'm holding onto my money for a 680 until a game come out that I need to lower too many settings ;). The 680 seems well able to run all the latest titles on max.

I had the dosh set aside for the new model but I hate the look of it, and dropping all the things that make an AW an AW was too much for me to go for. I like the multi-coloured grills and the alienhead power button, along with the media controls! Now I might as well save some money and go for a different OEM since they all look the same and performance is not part of the equation :p( although dells excellent support is still a big factor!).

    I say go for it!

Edit: forgot to add, make sure it comes with the full dell warranty, without that it's only worth half the price IMO ;)

Didn't manage to grab the first one as it only had 10months warranty and this one popped up for a huge discount

    AWM17X R4 (cancelled order, pristine)
    Stealth Black
    Intel® Core™ i7-3630QM (6MB Cache, 2.4GHz up to 3.4GHz with Turbo Boost 2.0)
English Genuine Windows 7 Home Premium
    12GB 1600MHz DDR3 Dual Channel RAM
    2GB GDDR5 AMD 7970M
    Bluray ROM /8X DVD+/-RW Drive
    750GB SATA hard drive (7200RPM)
    17.3" WideFHD (1920 x 1080) WLED LCD
Dell 3Yr Warranty (Till JUL- 2016)

All for only £999, i 'think' i got a great deal here, i know the 7970 is not lacking too far behind the 680m in terms of general gaming (not a benchmark freak),
    blu ray upgrade from dvd
    750gb from 500bb
3year warranty from 10months, and i'm willing to sacrifice the CPU for price and warranty

Did i get a good deal?

I'd say a great one! Only an SSD needed (or a cache SSD) and you have a perfect rig. Like you say the GPU is way good enough for almost full extreme settings in all the latest titles, and any i7 is way good enough for gaming, it may just be a little more work with the AMD drivers. But since NV have messed up big-time in the last six months drivers is a level playing field right now.

    Grab it!

Well the small MSATA drives are cheaper and from posts I have assisted with, they are almost as fast as a dedicated SSD. You would only see a difference in benchmarking not 'real world'. The hardware and software should already be set up if it has the deafult AW build, so it is very easy to set up. Plug it in, turn on caching and enjoy your ~15sec windows load times. It is harder to get to the socket and you will need to search out a good teardown video but it's really not too hard, you just need to know the sequence - unfortunately the dell documentation does not cover this, although it shows you how to replace just about every other part :D

Great purchase, welcome to the AW club. We are all here to help with advice and guidance, just post to the owners lounge first before starting a top level thread and you are golden ;)
