Hey I've been reading this forum alot lately and decided to post as I'm looking to get a mx17 with a beastly 7970m, was just wondering are the new i7's worth waiting for ? and would they be much more expensive
-
Doubt ivy will see a big performance jump but the 7970M will be worth it.

they are saying IVY is about a 10-15% performance increase at each segment. Plus much better integrated graphics...however, it won't make any difference in gaming as the discrete vid card is still the bottleneck.

I'm personally curious how much battery life will be gained by using less power. Hope its at least a bit noticeable

Clock for clock it's almost the exact same :/

Pointless upgrade for Sandy Bridge XM users (since we can beat all Ivy QMs), but it's nice to have on new models, so if you haven't got a laptop just wait! -
Wait for mobile Kepler & GCN & consider Ivy as a nice perk.
-
I say since its just few more days before the announcement then its worth waiting I guess.
The news about IB is not this certain when I ordered my R3. Although I am very happy with what I got so far -
At this point it is probably worth waiting. If it was me I would wait and see the 680m and then also be able to get the newer mobo and Ivy CPU. It doesn't really make much difference, but it is almost certainly not more than a month wait, so it is probably worth it.

I opted to order now. Rep I spoke w/ gave me a great deal on the R4 since its still SB. Saved some good $$$
-
^ price / options ?
-
the announcement is 3 days away, so it's worth waiting. Those who already own Sandy, don't need to bother, imho. Nothing special as far as performance goes. Same thermals and similar speeds.
-
If you buy the R4 you will receive it with IB so you really dont have a choice

I would also recommend reading through that thread, especially posts by Bill.
Read between the lines. -
Even if my R4 turns up with Ivy, I'm still putting my 2920XM in it as I'm pretty sure it will fit and work as I'm not rich enough to get a 3920XM.

The beaver wants to run an AMD and Nvidia 3D setup?Regardless though, if you're ordering a QM, I think it's cool to have the IB.
-
I haven't ordered one yet. I'm waiting for the 680m and then making a decision depending on how it performs. The only thing Ivy brings to the table for me is PCIe 3.0 which mobile cards don't even saturate. If the 680m performs fater than the 7970m then it's a no brainer but if it doesn't I'll have to consider other options
-
-
Unless of course they are going to make or give different adapter etc etc and make separate board that is able to draw more power in the case a customer opts for 680m.
The only thing I am considering right now is brightness and quality difference between 3d and non 3d screen
Nvidia is not necessarily always the best to go and vice versa. -

From what I read ivy bridge isn't much of a jump from Sandybridge. About 10-15%. It's mostly meant for the 3.0 integration and highly doubt we will see that anytime soon.
I have a question since I read so much about people getting Ivy instead of SB when it ships. If I get 2670QM would be the same as Ivy bridge in terms of speed? There are 3 different chips for the m17x. I want to make sure if the ghz will remain the same or change? -
-
got a question.... atm I can get the upgrade from 2670qm to 2760qm for just $9 more(I'm assuming it's because they're trying to get rid of SB chips), would it be better to go for that instead of waiting for the ivy bridge refresh?
-
IB definitely at this point, get IB
-
I'm guessing that 3620 to 3720 would be a lot more than $9 though... I guess it depends on how the 2760qm matches up with the 3620...
also, the price for the 2760qm setup right now is just $1608 through AAFES, a discount I'm not sure would remain after the ivy bridge release -
what's the machine you are getting? can you write the specs

Check the site again, because Ivy Bridge is up on the configurator.
Base M17x w/ i7-3610QM is $1,499.00 -
-
hmm still not up on uk site
-
They added a new option. Hard drive + 32gb ssd cache is what I'm thinking of getting. Should I get it? I'm not sure how to understand how that works there. Windows 7 runs off main ssd and the hard drive is storage correct? Seems like a good deal for 75$ for that extra.
-
I changed the order to the i7-3720qm and my edd went from 5/22 to 6/26

spoke to a dell rep guy and said ivybridge wont be an option in the uk for a few weeks
Worth waiting for ivybridge?
