Buy a 22 inch monitor and a razer blackwidow ultimate keyboard and never use my laptop's monitor/keyboard?
-
You could use both screens at the same time.
I think you would have to leave the laptop's lid open. Is it possible to turn the M17x on with the lid down? -
Yeah. Why not sell your laptop and get a desktop at that rate?

Don't want to insult you, but 'yes, kinda'.
If you definitively NEVER EVER use this machine somewhere else than your Desk, there is no rational reason to buy a/this Laptop, but you already have it, so...
For the price of the m17x you could get industrial-standard CAD-Workstation for your Desk with all kinds of nifty stuff and at least 4 times the computational power, but meh.
If you take this high performance system to a friend/family/vacation/college/work/etc from time to time, it would be okay to buy a Screen, keyboard/mice & Soundsystem for its 'headquater'. As sugested, using both screens would be efficent.
If you disable 'energy saving when lid closed' you can use an external screen while its closed, but you have to open it to reach the power button anyway, so why not keep it open next to your 22".

For what you're wanting to do, get a desktop. The reason for the laptop is to play on the go (including the couch hahah). If I seriously want to play a game I play it on my 73" TV screen or my 30"s not on the laptop.
Change the power setting for the lid to "do nothing" and you can close the lid without anything happening. I haven't tested on external monitor but shouldn't do anything. -
I don't think your crazy at all. I was gaming tonight with an external keyboard. To be honest I do not like the feel of the keyboard for some reason compared to my old faithfuls. The control key seems in a different area than I'm used to on my tactx and old MS Sidewinder. I also have a 22" monitor I have considered setting up downstairs with this setup. My main system sits up in my office away from my kids PC so the m17x is the ultimate for when we game together and I want to sit with them. Its also easy for me to throw in the car when I travel for work and leave the monitor home.

You do what ever makes you happy. I have seen several people in the forum tell how they always use a external keyboard and monitor all the time. Helps the resale value they say. I really don't think that matters if your easy on the system. But really, set it up however you want. After all It's you and no one else that picked it out, paid for it, set it up and will enjoy it!

Yeah, I don't really like gaming on the laptop's keyboard. Don't wanna strain my eyes so I just back off and hook It up to my TV with an external keyboard.
-
Im doing that, works just fine. I use my flatscreen as my main monitor and i have a razer mouse and keyboard hooked up. If you go to power options you can change the computers behavior when you close the lid, setting it to "nothing" should allow you keep it on with the lid down. Having the additional luxury of being able to bring it anywhere is great, but M17x"s are desktops (in weight and size
) so no shame in hooking it up to a huge flatscreen and getting your gaming on !

I use a 27 in external monitor and keyboard/mouse with my machine and am really happy with it. I also keep the display closed and the computer running 24/7. No problems to speak of.
I do use it as a laptop every couple of weeks though when I travel, and for those very instances, I'm so glad I have a laptop! -
If this was about an M17X-R2 with an RGB screen, then I would say: "Yes, that IS stupid." However, it's the regular 1920x1080 LED screen so it should be fine. I don't see anything wrong with using the laptop always docked. There may come a point in time where you will undock it to take it somewhere anyway. Besides, it makes life easier if you decide to move the laptop to another room. You just lift a laptop, not a massive computer tower.

this is one of those " are u serious" threads...
If i didn't have to move around all the time, I would never buy a laptop. the overall experience of using the desktop far exceeds any of such with laptop.
the screen on r3 is terrible, keyboard is not adjustable (just like any other laptop keyboards) so yea, whatever you buy in addition is not a waste BUT the laptop itself can be...
Anyhow, get one of those IPS matrix huge monitors and you'll be fine. You can also go to power settings, choose lid options to not to do anything when you close lid, you're good to close the lid and forget about it.
Would it be stupid for me to.....
