upgrading to 16GB of Kingston HyperX (1600 or 1866) and also the Gtx 580m in the future like after a year? i just got my r3 a week ago and this is my specs:

    i7 2720qm
    8gb 1333mhz ram
Gtx 460m (only 60hz screen do not like 3d)
    640gb raid 0 HDD (2x320gb)

i wasnt able to afford the AMD 6970m. i didnt want to wait to afford it due to needing it for college in the fall and because i will not be doing serious gaming for a little while. but when i do will it be best to upgrade the RAM and the graphics card, also i will be using programs like autoCAD.

That amount of RAM is largely excessive, you may need it for the CAD work, but certainly not for gaming or anything else. Your 8GB is fine for now and I think it would handle your CAD aswell. The GTX580 will be a good upgrade and the 460m should get you by just fine until then.

So for you, doing CAD, the RAM might be worth it, for most of us it absolutely won't. A GPU upgrade is never a bad thing, but the 6970 may offer more bang for the buck vs the expensive 580m.

thanks for the info. I think that my 8 gb will be fine till i get some money for more ram, i think i am probably going to get the RAM first unless i do not need it for CAD. the decision between the GPU is tough, i am probably going to be needing this laptop for about 4+ years (no more than 6 cuz 4 is pushing it) before i jump into another Alienware, i need it to be future proof so the extra $$ may be worth it for the GTX 580m
