Hello, I am strongly considering purchasing an M17X R4. I was curious if I could get some assistance with that from either a Dell rep, or someone working in their Alienware dept.

Reason I'm coming here is because I was recommended to do so by some [H]ers after noticing that the prices per part on the alienware builder site are.. Well quite frankly a little asburdly off. In fact, you can't even see the real price you're being charged per part, only the difference between that upgrade and what they charge you for the standard part. VERY shady and misleading.

For example, $400 to upgrade to a 256gb SSD? Samsung 830 256gb, one of the best in the industry is up for $269 right now on newegg (And was on sale last week for around $220). I would consider buying as few of your parts as possible and just buying aftermarket parts, but I'd like to avoid nullifying any warranties, buying as is would be nice if I could get some serious help with buying this laptop.

My total cost comes out to $2900~ for everything I want. And I feel that is way off. If I could get a little sales rep 1 on 1? Much appreciated.

You could have also hopped on their chat line or given them a call to price haggle.

Your best bet is to create a build and save it, then call a rep and tell him what you want and start working with them. There are guides here that help with it.

Good luck with your purchase. If you do end up purchasing one, you most likely wont regret it.

Ezero, it is highly recommended to buy the alienware computer by going through a reseller or talking to rep to get a discount.

However, as you have seen from the pricing, dell charges huge for ram and harddrive/SSD upgrades. it is recommended to do those yourself because those are easy to install yourself.

Get a base m17x R4, upgrade the vid card, upgrade to 1080p LCD, do the rest yourself

I couldn't agree more with the guys above. The prices online for certain parts are of the scale!

You can always buy RAM, Hard Disk etc. online and upgrade it your self for a fraction of the price Dell quotes online. And do not worry about you warranty. As long as you don't break anything, you warranty will not be voided.
