Hey guys, with the m18x coming out, and the m14x already released, we see the appearance of Xi-fi sound software and subwoofers. I know the r3 lacks a subwoofer (sad, continued below), but is the 20$ software still compatible with the sound system?
On to the subwoofer, is it possible to install one, or would it be not worth the trouble? Don't see how a 14iner gets something a DTR 17in doesn't have.![]()

I don't believe it's possible to install a subwoofer on the R3 since it requires a separate vent, which you would need to cut out yourself. I'm sure there's a bunch of repositioning of internal components you'd have to do also to fit the subwoofer in. As for the software, the X-Fi MB isn't all that great. The thing that makes the most difference in sound is the Waves MAXXAudio 3 algorithms that they apply to the sound controller (like in the XPS15/17, M14x, M18x).
The M17xR3 originally had that functionality, but through new drivers (v6320) released by Dell in March, it seems like they purposely removed that functionality completely. The only way you can regain the MAXXAudio functionality back is by reinstalling the "old" v6314 driver. I have no idea why they would remove an entire audio feature through new drivers, but it seems like Dell doesn't want to support Waves MAXXAudio on the M17xR3, as it's not even advertised on the product page anymore.
The Waves feature definitely works, but all of the newer M17x R3's that are being shipped out, come with the newer drivers, and so unsuspecting customers don't realize that their laptop is missing the Waves functionality. Mine shipped with no Waves features, and luckily due to these forums, I found out that the drivers that came with my laptop removed Waves, so I reinstalled the older driver to regain that feature. -
I'd pass on the SB MB software solution. Had it, and it was "ok" but nothing stunning and not worth it, plus it has bugs here and there which is annoying.
If you are looking for slightly better sound in a very compact space, or portable, you could try these.
Edifier MP300 2.1 Speaker System Review
They get pretty good reviews in many places, and while not stunning room shakers, they'll at least trounce any laptop size speaker without taking up much space. -
It's honestly just a lot better to hook up your laptop to a dedicated sound system, if possible.
I have mine running into a receiver, that's hooked up to a set of decent speakers, and a good sub. Shakes the walls.
No manufacturer is ever going to have anything comparable to a stand alone system, built into the laptop. It's just a simply matter of size/sound dynamics. -

EDIT: I don't think I did it properly because I can't find the Waves controller. -
I have the older version on mine - the IDT control panel didnt work on the newer version (HUGE fail on part of Dell there). The Waves options are in the control panel with presets for music/gaming/movies..

I uninstalled and reinstalled and it works now. Thanks!
