i have a xps 1730 with a x9000 dual core duo xtreme and dual 8800 mgt sli's. The mobo fried yesterday so i ordered a m17 with 8gb ram, dual (i think) 5870 crossfires @1gb and a 740qm processor @ 1.73. I mostly play xplane and microsoft flight sim with the settings maxed out. Will it be comparable when i get it or will it be an improvement? Sorry for the bad spelling i am on my iphone. The gave me a ship date of 11/16

I had an XPS 1730... it was junk and that fake carbon fiber case looked like crap. Not to mention the 8800s got fried...

The M17X is the Ferrari of Notebooks, the XPS 1730 is a lifted Ford Pinto Stationwagon with Mud Flaps...

Ok thanks. This is the first time ordering a computer without reading about it. Btw is the crossfireX 5870 a dual setup compared to the regular 5870? The sales rep didn't give me a good answer

yeah, so it includes 2 5870 graphics cards that are configured in "sli" type configuration. Will definitely improve performance in games that support it.

SLI is Nvidia's multi GPU interface, and CrossfireX is AMD/ATI's multi GPU interface. So anything labeled SLI/CrossfireX means it's a multi GPU system.

Crossfire is basically SLI in Nvidia. The XPS 1730 carried its own weight back than just like something better will come along a few years from now and smoke the M17x.
I did/do own these and loaded: XPS M1730, M17xR1, M17xR2, Precision M6400 and a few other lower ends.

Improvement chiefs IMPROVEMent eheheheh oles! High 5 for your new machine. The XPS M1730 was probably dells last true gaming XPS notebook. In terms of High end and a price to match it LOL. I had one as well.

Now I too am on the M17x ALiens. I got abducted about a year ago LOL.

I have not looked back since. Its been awesome. Not only in gaming will you notice a significant boost however overall daily tasks and snappyness is superb. If your like me and likes to multitask a WHOLE heap then you will love the new Alien machine. It is that much faster and can finally keep up with me LOL. ehahaahahah. Well almost.......... ehahaha!

Oh and I almost forgot to give an honourable mention to the RGB LED screen. I hope you got that in your order. Oles! :p :p :D

    Welcome to the mother ship.

    Cheers. :)

Yeh the 1200p RGB LED screen is amazing. You'll love watching blurays on it oles.

The max amount of ram is 8gbs atm. So your all setup with the max amount already with your purchase.
Not sure about in the future if it will support more or not. When 8gb sticks chips come out and are cheaper. + we will need bios support for more than 8gbs of ram.

    Cheers. :)

Alaskan.. I had exact same 1730 spec, and 5th motherboard or video card fry they are finally replacing it. Ships 14/11 with specs as below, so we can share experiences.. but from the sounds of it, we will not be disappointed.

M1730's aren't bad machines! I own one before, just those Nvidia cards killed it. Screen and speakers are nice...bulky and heavy and way to hot to handle in long periods of gaming, can't blame the name blame the components. Wish that they made ATI cards for them in the days, pair of 3870's would make the M1730's a lot more reliable!

The XPS 1730 was a good machine, but it's no match for an M17xR2.

There's definitely a lot of praise for the RGB LED screen. Be interesting to see how good it is when my replacement arrives.

The reason i loved my XPS m1730 is because when a dell tech came to fix it, they actually were able to fix it. haha.

Replacements are always great though. It's exciting to be getting something that's new and you've never had before. My dream when i was a kid (yeah i was a nerd) was to have an alienware. they were like "OMG" computers, now i've got one and it makes me really happy (when the dell tech's aren't breaking it, haha) congrats on the new machine. I think you'll really love it.

After upgrading my m1730 to a m17x-R2, I would say its a major much needed upgrade/improvement.. But, I only have had 1 prob with the XPS m1730 and that was the video card.. Replaced from a 8800M GT SLI to a 9800M GTX SLI and it still works great.. I use the m17x for everyday use and the XPS m1730 is still used for what it could handle at the time including a lot of work (Visual Studio). Its my HD bedside machine also. :)
