Hi guys I just bought the m17xr4 with a 675m in it.

I'm not sure if it's possible to upgrade to a 680m on this machine? I have 14 days to return to retailer and if it's not an upgrade that is possible down the road I might just return the laptop. It's running what i play very well, although its a bit warm on the keyboard.

    Thanks.

Yup, the R4 is designed to handle the 680m. It's just if you've already got the 675m, the only options are to return the machine and order a new R4 with the 680m in the build, or pay out of pocket for a 680m card as it would be considered an upgrade.

Hi, yes it is an 'official' upgrade path although expensive! I've held off since the 675, runs everything great with a 10% OC, even 3D ;). As soon as a game cripples it, time for an upgrade...

Yeah I think i'll just purchase one in a year or so, it seems to run most the games I play on high settings anyways with around 50+ fps, I am concerned about heat though, this thing gets really hot on the bottom, is that pretty normal? I used a temp monitor and my gpu was around 65 average and my vrm whatsit sat at around 80 (Celsius for both) otherwise it's been pretty smooth. thanks for the help guys.

try running Planetside 2 maxed out and seeing what happens. Need to dampen the settings on my 6990m personally to medium/high to get a decent framerate. That is without the Nvidia specific eye candy turned on as well. Each to their own. :p

Sounds like the a reasonable route to go with. The temps also seem right in line with other M17x r4's. Congrats on the alien. :)

Ah that's good news then, thanks, it's a nice upgrade form my old m15x, it's kind of neat to see some of the things that irritated me design wise fixed, like the rear power plug and inset screen, and the the grippy finish around the keyboard (perfect for steady sniper shots in planetside with my mouse lol)

Don't have that game I'm afraid but I did choose my words carefully ;), 'great' is not perfect, just good enough for me. None of the latest games will run at a decent FPS in all-ultra but a few compromises (that I cant even see) it's fine. For example batman AC has everything at max except tessellation (normal) and it benches at ~45 FPS at stock clock and 50+ with a mild OC :D. Stunning 3D as well!

Each of my last three purchases were, I thought, going to be the 'card killer' but no, crysis 3, farCry3, TR, all good. TressX hair does kill TR but the effect is not that good anyway, hair still disappears when it shouldn't :(

It's nice to look at while standing there running a bench or to show off to a freind, but while playing, You never even see it anyway. You're to focused on the game and trying not to die. :)

Nice feature, but very pointless in the grand scheme of things.

You can upgrade the GPU later on if the budget is the problem. We have some parts available at [email protected]. They'll help you out with pricing.
