I don't understand how there's so many people on this forum who used to have 920xm + 4870's who somehow got 920xm + 5870's and then somehow got 940xm + 5870's. Seriously? Are you guys just buying the latest model every time a new one comes out? How can you possibly be that rich and/or think you should be doing that instead of, oh, I don't know, donating money to starving children?

the worst part I've see is people who actually say things like, "oh, i don't really play any games, I just benchmark."

    WHAT?!

I know it's off topic and I kinda don't care. I'm officially grossed out by it. this could be construed as envy and/or jealousy, but it's not. I have an m17x, and I have some truly decent specs that I'm more than happy with. I just don't see how there's so many people whose ego or superficial desire to always have the best (even if the change in performance is negligible) find it a worthwhile endeavor to actually sink so much money into something like that.

This is probably across the board. I'm sure there's men and women who do this same mindless crap in other fields such as in automobiles or homes, but seriously...?

    blah

Well, I think the simple explanation for it is ego. Its like that guy who buys a hummer because he thinks it will make him more manly. Not to say that people here buy the latest specs for manliness, just that if you spend a lot of time on an enthusiast computer forum, eventually you start comparing your specs to others... and this leads to wanting to always have the best :D

Also, although still quite expensive, if one were to buy a new laptop every time a new generation of cpu's and gpu's comes out, and sell a 1-2 year old rig each time, if one bought cheap/sold expensive one could potentially not spend tooooo much money...

And lastly, computer technologies develop at a lightning speed pace, and while getting new hardware every year or so is rather exorbitant, if you want to keep up with new software (not just games), in the end you have to upgrade every couple of years anyway... so its not that big of a difference.

These laptops are not that pricey in the whole scheme of things. This thing will put you back $8,000. ORIGIN EON 17 Custom Gaming Laptop. I got base everything accept the GPUs and LCD. I then added the other stuff from Newegg, Ebay, etc.

Sometimes upgrading is just more fun than actually using your laptop :p If I'd have enough money i'd probably buy a fully rugged clevo laptop aswell ^^

If you look at other products like cell phones; I know loads of people who upgraded to Iphone 4G from Iphone 3GS simply because they want the latest tech news. And they find that their old Iphone 3GS is suddently a bad cell-phone, because it's outdated. Same with all the Nintendo DS's and all it's models. People with "a lot" of money often spend more time looking for improvements than actually playing with the product itself, either to show-off to others or to get the "tidy" feeling of having everything perfect.

I bet when/if dual 5970 ever come out, some people will upgrade from 5870x2 to those simply because that's cool, and you know what? IT IS COOL! And if you don't think it is, then TOO BAD!

To the OP, how people earn their money or whether they are "rich", as you say, is none of your business. They can spend their money however they choose regardless of your disapproval.

Welcome to the forum! [IMG] Great to hear you've been tracking everyones orders and upgrades. I look forward to you positive influence in the Alienware community. Always nice to have new members. But whats wrong with buying/selling parts? Regardless of whether it's computers, cars, baseball cards, or furniture, what does it matter to you what somone does with their hard earned money? After all, I earned it, so if shouldn't I decide how I spend it? Or should I have somone like you telling me what to do with my money as you look down on me for having it? By no means am I rich, but I work 80+ hours a week, every to provide for my family. Last I looked at my paycheck your signature wasn't on it. I'm sure you have hobbies too so I'm sure you understand where i'm coming from.
