I saw an Alienware M17x r3 on eBay.It has everything I want and it's only a few weeks old.It says Dell warranty expires 12/29/12. It gave a service tag and I went to Dells website and looked it up.The original configuration included a Nvidia 580M graphics card but the person is selling it with an AMD 6990M.Would that void the warranty if they swapped out the card? I wouldn't mind a 6990M but I don't want to get screwed either.

    Hello and welcome to NBR.

    The way I see it:
-He could've had the 580M in the machine but Dell replaced it with the mobility 6990 and the config didn't get updated.

-He probably installed the 6990 himself for whatever reason. In this case , the warranty is not void, regardless if the card has been bought from Dell or not.

-He could've also given you a different service tag. I'm not saying this is the case but it can happen :/

if he pulled out the 580m and put the 6990m in himself, you will lose warranty on all video card related issues...however, the rest of your laptop (if originally on the warranty) should be ok. I would email the the seller and inquire if he did it or if dell replaced the card.

I saw this auction and it feels fishy, the guy has listed and sold a bunch of machines using the same picture and the same service tag. Maybe he is legit, or maybe he is going out with a bang.

My guess is the person bought it with a 580M, benched that card. And when he was done with that he sold the 580M. He then purchased a 6990M and benched that. Now he is considering selling his system. But again if it feels fishy,...well I tend to play it safe. If Dell didn't replace the video card, then yes, the warranty will be voided.
