    Hi there,

just recently I installed windows vista on my m17x (to run some software that wont run under windows 7)
to my surprise I discovered I have a built in mic that works? this was a shock to me as I've has this machine for 2 years with the factory fitted windows 7, and never ever knew it had a mic!
Well I'm finished with visa now and have put back on a fresh install of windows 7, however now this is back on, I'm again back to having no mic? I've tried different drivers off the dell website, but nothing will detect the mic and get it working again, yet on vista it's fine? I've tried this a few times now, without doing anything special it works everytime on vista, but no matter what I do It won't work on windows 7?

does anyone else have this problem? does anyone know how to get it to work?

    Regards..

    Koki

p.s I'm new to posting so can someone tell me what Tags are for? (you have 5 for each post) haha sorry if thats a stupid question?

    Try Fn+F9.
Also did you follow the guide to install all the drivers in the proper order?

Thank you for your reply, It's not an Fn+f9 problem, the camera is on, just there is no evidence that a mic even exists?
I swapped from windows 7 and vista a few times, always it works fine on vista even though I don't install anything in any particular order.
As for windows 7 I have tried many installation orders, including the correct one, but sadly no joy yet!
Any other advice you can give me is more than wecome
    Regards..
    Koki

Do you see it listed in the device manager?

Koki_uki, your laptop is a M17x not a M17x R2 as per your description here.
    Therefore, you'll need these drivers.

Hi again, no I cannot see it listed anywhere in the device manager.

Yes, I realise that now. Although a little confused at first, as I looked at people's ad's selling R1 and the ones I've seen look different, for example the little touch buttons near the alien head are not the same as mine?
Anyway, as for the drivers thanks for the link, but my service tag (I think) puts me on the right driver page at the Dell site, even though It didn't know the exact model :)

That's because your model is simply called M17x, it's a common mistake to call it M17x R1 which makes it easy to confuse it with the area-51 M17-R1 or the area-51 m17x (notice the lowercase m).

Ok, if you're using your service tag, your system should be correctly recognized.
