    i am in the market for a new laptop. was thinking of getting a 17 inch 3d machine and have narrowed it down to 2. just wondering if anyone has seen both of these screens and can compare them.

    base model alienware is about 300 dollars more than envy 3d quick ship with compareable specs. alienware has hdmi in which is pretty cool. also has nvidia which i prefer.

    new envy looks pretty sweet. i currently have an envy 14 and am very pleased with the build quality of it. if anyone can comment on alienware build quality vs envy that would be apprecited too.

    i think for me it would come down to screen quality on this as i am quite unsatisfied with the screen on my envy 14. the new envy 15 (if has ips panel) also has my attention as well. would probably be willing to drop down screen size and give up 3d if the 15's screen will be far and away better.

    That is not a very good GPU!

    Alienware all the way with the 580m.

    alienware with gtx 580m definitely, don't know if it is true but HP CEO said somewhere (maybe CES) that HP will go out of PC business! outrageous I know but even intel's CEO has a comment on it :D

    First of all;
    If you're going for 3D, go for the 580m in the Alienware. The HP's 17" Envy is just pure bull, a friend of mine has had it and the cooling in that system is awfull. Even when it was brand new, it was like a freaking oven when running idle.

    Secondly, NO, HP is not going out of the personal-computer business, they planned, but it has been decided that they will continue.

    Best of luck,
    - Scott.

    yea id go with alienware if you want a REAL gaming machine. Just watched a review of the envy 17 3d and I LOL'd. The review said,"It plays games great.... at 720p." that was 2D, he hadn't even started on 3D. The Alienware is able to push 1080p in both 2D and 3D. If you want a good 3D experience for 3D gaming, get the alienware ;)

    thanks for all the replies. i honestly hadnt even thought of playing games in 3d. was wanting the 3d more for video. i had planned on getting the 560m because i do most of my gaming on consoles and it doesnt really matter to me what the game looks like as long as it plays smooth. how does the 560 compare to the 580? will the 560 run current games at decent settings smoothly in 3d?

    also was thinking of getting the 60 ghz wireless hdmi. anyone have any experience with this? was thinking it would be great for watching netflix/hd .mkv/football while surfing the web or whatever on the couch. as is now i have to hook up my current envy everytime i want to do that.

    also anyone have any thoughts on the screen quality? i have an hp hdx 18 and think it has an awesome screen on it. i also have a samsung 6 series tv and would like to have something as good as that just smaller.
