couple options, and you gotta decide yourself which is your best course of action and which is the most realistic to achieve. Now I'll try to keep this honest as possible but if you just got it, you could contact dell and notify them of the problem and suggest that it is shipping error or something along those lines and have them replace it. I didn't say lie here, I I'm just playing the proper assumptions as to what you've stated in your original post. your course of action is to read a guide how to disassemble the part and have it replaced by the same part buying either form Dell/Alienware directly or Ebay, although because the system is so new I wouldn't exactly say the common market is flooded with these parts yet when compared to an R2.

You could always try covering it with a skin like this one KH Special Carbon Skin Cover Fit DELL Alienware M17x R3 | eBay, not my personal recommendation but a possibility nevertheless.

Lastly you could try to brush it out, seeing as it's all rubber using proper tools and delicately you can polish it out I think.

    Lemme know the progress...

    And best of Luck.

Its in the rubber coating you wont be able to polish that out especially if its deep. Anything you try is just going to make it worse and the surrounding area worse.

IMO and I'm extremely anal about this you should call them up and tell them this is unacceptable for a new product. You could try and get them to send you just a new lid, or the other option would be a complete computer replacement.

Paying the money we do for these systems they should have ZERO cosmetic defects. Component failure happens and I can understand that. But having your brand new 2k laptop come scratched up like that is just unacceptable in my view.

They'll send you the new part, I got them to resend me 2 keyboard benzels because the glue on the right side of the media buttons wasn't holding and it kept going up. So you can definately get that scratch replaced. :D Just call them and complain and have them send a tech over with the replacement part. If it doesn't work out lemme know. :D

The back cover is also a cheap part if you want to go DIY. However it is whole heartily possible to contact Dell and have them repair it for you under warranty.
