wondering where i can get one that will work with my system.. bought my r3 refurb and it came with just a dvd drive... chatted with alienware support a couple of times and was told they would let me know when the part i needed was available.. then i get an e-mail saying it is no longer available..

search google for a Panasonic UJ-230-A drive. That's a blu-ray & DVD burner, slot-loading, and SATA interface so it should be compatible with the m17x.
-
or a sony bd-5850 blu-ray burner, got it for 79 bucks.
is slot loading sata bdrw drive and works in r3/r4 -
Someone should do a comparison of the two & see which performs better.

Have both but the sony writes blurays so thats why i got it.
Writes dvd just as fast as the stock bdrom/dvdrw drive. -
The Panasonic UJ-230-A writes blurays too. That's why I wonder which one stands taller in a performance test.
-
aha, my bad, thought the panasonic was a reader..
dunno about that but my sony does 6x on a bd-re 50 gb disk
only by comparing them with specs the sony can write 4x faster on any disc and sony can write bd-xl 100gb discs. seems to me an easy win for the sony drive. -
I installed the Panasonic on a laptop for my neighbor. He wanted to burn his HD camcorder movies to bluray. He says its been working pretty good so far.
bd player on m17r3
