Anyone ._.?
-
Can you upload your minidump file? If you haven't fooled with your Windows settings, you'll find it in C:\Windows\Minidump\<Folder with date of BSOD>
-
I restored back to factory settings even though it just came out of the box. so far, no bsod. i'll post the minidump file if a bsod comes up again.
Edit: Nevermind, I got BSOD loading up starcraft 2, it says it's a power state something failure... let me upload the file -
-
Did you update the bios to A04 by any chance? If you have, get rid of it and replace it with the A03. Should fix bsod happening most of the time.
-
It looks like it's your kernal causing the BSOD, and from what you posted in your original post, it looks like you're not using Windows 7 Service Pack 1. I'd recommend upgrading to SP1 and see what happens afterwards. It will upgrade your kernal to the SP1 version and may resolve your issues!
As a reference for you: Kernal in the OS = ntoskrnl.exe in %systemroot%\System32. The Windows RTM (A.K.A. No service packs) version is 6.1.7600.<random numbers in accordance to patches> while in SP1 it's 6.1.7601.<random numbers in accordance to patches>. -
Thanks, I will upgrade to sp1 and see if it persists.
@zoolian A03 is better than A04? I thought people said A04 fixed problems that A03 had. -
It seems that i got another blue screen while playing a game again. It's the same power state driver failure.

I pulled the following from both your dump files:
DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE (9f)
A driver is causing an inconsistent power state.
Arguments:
Arg1: 0000000000000003, A device object has been blocking an Irp for too long a time
Arg2: fffffa8008052a20, Physical Device Object of the stack
Arg3: fffff80000b9c4d8, Functional Device Object of the stack
Arg4: fffffa800bf0d010, The blocked IRP
Let's check if it's somethign physically wrong with your machine. Reboot your computer and press F12 to get into the Boot Options menu. Select Diagnostics and let the tool do its thing. It will analyze all physical components of your computer. -
I ran the test and it says that the tests has passed. I googled around and some people say that it could be the nvidia driver problem that causes a driver power state fail?
-
That's possible. If you haven't done it, try updating all your drivers. Here's a link to Batboy's thread for recent drivers.
Let me know what happens. -
I updated from 266 to 267, the 267 gave blue screens, i dont know if the 266 does or not, i will roll back and see. I also couldn't upgrade to version 275 in batboy's thread even with darcoder's mod. & what about the A03 bios suggestion?
-
I'm on A04 and not seeing any BSOD at all. You could give it a shot, but you should also call up Dell tech support and find out if they can do something for you. My first month with my machine, I had a DOA DVD drive which hampered performance and my lights on my monitor blew. Called them up and they sent me a brand new replacement in which I've seen a massive boost in performance. Seeing how you just recently received your machine, this is inexcusable on Dell's behalf and I'd fight hardcore for a new one.
-
Alright, I will try to get a brand new one. Hope Dell doesn't make me pay a price or something.
-
They shouldn't at all. You're still in the return period, so if they make you pay, you have that option.
-
Hey everyone. Sorry to bump a not so old topic, but I've been having similar problems with my M17X R3 as well. In the span of three months, I've had eight BSODs for no apparent reason, they just occur at random. One thing that I am aware of is that each time this occurs is when the laptop is plugged and charging, at least AFAIK. I'm no too tech savvy, so please excuse me if I skip any details about the problem. My specs are:
Intel Core I7
700GB HDD
nVidia Geforce GTX 460M.
8 GB RAM
Here's the minidump if anyone is willing to help:
101811-18922-01.dmp
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! -
Just let me ask you a few questions.
Can you upgrade to newer nvidia drivers without a modified inf file?
Do any of your problems or bsods have the error message "ntoskrnl.exe?" -
For the first question, I don't think I can. I already downloaded the drivers and it keeps telling me that "the driver could not recognize any compatible graphics hardware", so I looked that up and yes, turns out I have to manually modify an INF file for me to be able to update my graphics card.
As for the second question, I looked the last time I got a BSOD and found this:
BCCode: 9f
BCP1: 0000000000000003
BCP2: FFFFFA8007FC9A10
BCP3: FFFFF80000B9C3D8
BCP4: FFFFFA800CD62E10
OS Version: 6_1_7601
Service Pack: 1_0
Product: 768_1
Where can I look for that message if I have it? -
Yeah, u got the 9f error code, it's nvidia messing up. Just to verify though, download "Bluescreenview" and check to make sure its consistent on the ntoskrnl.exe errors.
-
It appears so. I downloaded Bluescreenview and every minidump file I have has ntoskrnl.exe highlited with red.
-
Try this method. Or call up dell and tell them your problem and hope to get an upgrade.
http://forum.notebookreview.com/ali...-m17x-r3-bsod-start-till-now.html#post7903069 -
So it's come to that. If I'm going to send it back it's going to be a real hassle, being that I'm not from the US, but I guess that's what I'll try first. If all else fails, there's always that method you linked me to. Should I expect an upgrade or a replacement in the case they actually want to get on my side? Meaning that I'll just pay the difference and get another M17X with a GTX 560M or something like that.
Anyways, this has been really helpful. Thank you zoolian.
-
your problem is the cross fire. if it shifts and the laptop dont detect it properly during start up (or second card), it will BSOD. Remove second card and or be nice to it and press f8 and select "start computer with last settings that works"
I pretty much got mine for free and as a result, i wanted it to be fixed.... for free
also, update the video firmware.
my laptop has not BSOD for months. -
Kakureru, he has the R3 model, not the R2.
The r2 does not have 460m as an available option. Nor does nvidia have "Crossfire" option, it's known as "SLI." -
oops my bad.
-
Hey guys, ever since i tried to call them( no luck), i found out that whenever i get BSOD's is mostly when i'm on balanced/power saving mode, or when my 460m isnt working and is running on the integrated. There has been occasions where i do get BSOD's in high perf mode though. Bugs the hell out of me seeing how alienware wouldnt even let me get a brand new replacement since I just had it out of the box.
-
The power setting doesn't matter. The 460m + Optimus + m17x doesn't work together very well. Too many conflicting issues for some reason.
-
Well, one thing's for sure. Whenever I run games and it's not using my 460m, it will eventually BSOD. Even in idle mode where nothing is running, when I leave it on other power modes other than high perf, it'll eventually BSOD, do other programs use the gfx card or something?
-
My laptop has ever since been running with no problems except the BSOD's associated with the files ntoskrnl.exe (nt+0x7CC40) and ntkrnlmp.exe (nt!KeBugCheckEx+0x0); I scanned these minidump files with the program WhoCrashed and it came up with those 2 files as the cause of the BSOD's. I formatted my laptop so I only have 1 minidump file from after the format. However all the BSOD's i got were the same, and I addressed this problem on this forum before. So here is the info from before:

Can someone also tell me why whenever I sometimes play games or reopen my laptop from sleep and my GTX 460m is turned off and set to my intel gfx card? Whenever this happens, I always will get the same BSOD later on if I don't reboot. Also sometimes if I reboot/turn on my laptop, my 460m isn't turned on so I have to reboot, 1 or more times in order for it to work again. -
Update to A08 bios, preferably the unlocked, and disable integrated as I mentioned in the previous posts. If you don't, you "WILL" keep having bsod problems, no matter what is replaced.
Here's the A08 unlocked. You will need a flash drive for this though.
http://www.mediafire.com/?2vw45vmgsk2vt7l -
My bios is already in A08 but I will try the unlocked. Does this also address the other problems? And where is the option in the bios to turn off the integrated gfx card?
-
Alright, I updated the bios, turned off the integrated gpu. I then tested it and put it on power saving mode and left it there overnight to see if it would give a BSOD, which it did.

Back to the dump file, the BSOD was caused by the pci.sys driver. Try running a system file scan:
- Open an elevated command prompt (Start > type cmd in the search > right click "cmd.exe" > click "run as administrator" > type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes and hit enter.
Allow the scan to run its course and see if any errors show up. -

Try going to the stock dell driver on the site, then disable the integrated chip.
