hey guys.. first of all i know nothing about computers or anything so i need help here :/

my friend is wanting to sell a m17x to me for $800, and it is 2 years old.

all my friends say yes its worth it because of the price and whatever.. but then i get other people saying no.

i thought i'd come here and get more opinions.

i dont know specifications fully, sorry.

but any help would be great.

    thanks

The specs would help us determine if it's worth it. Could you get those?

Hello, Karovc and welcome to NBR.

I would like to ask you why would you pay for something you don't know its value?
The price can vary based on the system's specs so it would be great if you could ask the owner to provide them.

Karovc, we're not saying he'll rip you off, we're just asking for the system specs so we can assess its current average value.

    First of all, there's 3 m17x's.

    The m17x, R2, and R3.

That's a M17x, first 17" Alienware released by Dell, folks on the forums call it M17x R1 but that creates a lot of confusion with the pre Dell model.
Also the iGP is not a 8600M it is 9400M.
800$ is a good price for such a system assuming it's in good condition.

Also i rather say this now than after when it will be too late: If you ever end up buying it and decide to fresh install Windows on it, DO NOT INSTALL COMMAND CENTER FROM THE DRIVERS DVD that came with the machine.

Does it have any warranty left on it? The thing is he could sell it to you in perfect condition but some component could randomly burn out in 1-6 months, meaning you'll have to spend more on it, or get a new laptop. It's worth bearing this in mind.

800 dollars is a very good price for that machine, sli 280M should still be able to max all the games I guess, still if you could ask him what is the processor that would be great :)

Another thing if you do get it, Always start the machine with it plugged in otherwise you will wonder why all your games run like crap :D

It disables the 280m GPUs and the only way to get them back on is through the bios.

I almost sent mine back when i first got it due to this. I thought I had been ripped off!

    Well Im still using mine.

It plays all the top titles including Shogun II and Battlefield 3 on high settings. I will replace mine at some point but it still going great guns and I dont feel the need to have two AW's.

The M17x R1 and R2 are absolutely fantastic machines. They are still high-powered compared to almost anything else you can buy made by other manufacturers. I would say that is a reasonable asking price if it is in immaculate condition.
