Hi all managed to score a nice and cheap R3 it simply needed windows restore and a graphics card seeing as the old one was dead.

I've put a 6990m in it as I had one spare and the bios reads it as ATI GFX, boot into windows it just installs VGA driver and ATI driver cant see it...

Any ideas how else I can install the correct drivers?

    Thanks!

I don't know anything about swapping out graphics cards, and checking if they're working properly. But if you have in fact done it properly, and all the other drivers are installed correctly, the sound, etc....

    AMD Catalyst

Just download that and it'll download the correct driver package for you :)

yeah that kept failing to detect the card itself... None the less I am able to install 12.11 but do get a white screen on boot - until I put the lappy in sleep mode and power it back it back up...?

Hmm really unsure. Do you have the latest bios update?

Lets hope somebody who knows about switching out graphics cards knows of a solution.

Hvae you tried installing Dells 6990m drivers? You need them for the Intel 3000 too. Once you hsve installed Dells drivers, you can then install the 12.11's over the top.

Or alternatively, disable the IGPU and switch to PEG and install the 6990m drivers. If you get 6 beeps on start up (after disabling igpu) your card is fried.

    Downloads

    Here you go.

    extract and run the InsydeFlashx64.exe

Make sure your laptop is pluged into AC and let it do its thing :)

This BIOS is is also handy to keep in case you brick your laptop and need to blind flash.
