Using an HDMI/VGA cable to LaCIE CRT from M17X-R1.
CRT is detected and reported as extended desktop in Windows 7 Mobillity, but the monitor shows nothing.

Is there more for me to do other than connect and make settings in control panels?

    Thanks

There is a VGA port next to the HDMI.
Or you have the Area-51 m17x?. not sure if that one has an VGA port.

This is the early M17X -R1.
There is absolutely no VGA port.
That is why I thought the HDMI to VGA cable would work, connecting the monitor to the HDMI port on the laptop.

Can anyone verify that this laptop will connect to a CRT monitor. Since this laptop model is from a few years back, I was hoping so.

If you're using a cable, I doubt there's any conversion from HDMI to VGA (Digital to Analog) going on. The cable is for DVI to VGA but probably not stated as such.

You need a real converter box.

This has nothing to do with digital to analog.
I am simply trying to connect my laptop that has no VGA port, but does have an HDMI, to my external monitor, with a VGA, that I have been using for years with my G5. I am not trying to connect to a TV and I am not trying to get both audio and video... just trying to extend my desktop, so that I have more workspace.

Please, does anyone have any experience with an M17X - R1 connecting to an external monitor?

    Thanks

Thank you so much for your help. I am sorry for my frustration level. I am unemployed and broke right now. I need to know that if I invest in this adapter it will work.

Your helpful links show me that I have the option of getting an HDMI to DVI male to male plus a VGA to DVI female to female to connect to my monitor's VGA cable, which would be a bit cheaper than getting the HDMI to VGA adapter.
Do you see any preference between the two? any difference in performance?

If I can save a few dollars it helps, but not if it will be less reliable.
I value your opinion, since you can see I am not very knowledgeable or experienced with these things.

Checking here people are saying they are not having any luck. I am sorry but I am so very confused.

This is an updated version of an earlier post. It seems there are issues when using AutoCAD. I want to run Revit and Rhino with extended desktop to external VGA monitor

Someone using HDMI to DVI ran into problems with color realization... please read
Amazon.com: depencil "detigel"'s review of AmazonBasics HDMI to DVI Adapter Cable (9...

If I use this HDMI to VGA adapter do you think I will have similar issues? HP HDMI to VGA Display Adapter | HP® Official Store

I can find no substantial reviews of anyone using this adapter and before I purchase this hoping it will solve my problem... please give me informed feedback.

I need help. There is background exchange on my earlier post "external CRT monitor, not LCD". Obviously the CRT/LCD thing is not the issue as I first thought. My HDMI to VGA cable supposedly needs the HP adapter to transfer digital to analog. It is not working alone and I need to find the right solution.

    Thanks

In my experience getting any monitor to work correctly on any video card can be hit or miss. This is especially true if using one or more adaptors. The truth is no one can predict with certainty if your monitor will work with your latop. I personaly need to perform multiple tricks to get mine working.
Botom line: you are going to need to experiment. Im really sorry you are out of work, and wish you the best.

Is it the Area 51 m17x? If it had a Displayport you could get a simple Displayport to VGA adapter for $25. The one I just got works perfect (the Displayport to DVI adapter I bought worked but had some odd issues).

HDMI to DVI should be lossless. The signal stays the same, just the adapter format is changed (and you lose audio). HDMI to VGA is going to be lossy. That's a digital to analog conversion.

It's an M17X-R1, no VGA no Displayport.

I am ready to order the HP HDMI to VGA adapter. Please if anyone thinks this will only work on HP laptops please tell me.
    UPDATE:
I just ordered the HP HDMI to VGA adapter (converter) and will report back if it works.

    Thanks

I order most, if not all, my cables from monoprice.com They have good pricing and I've yet to encounter any cable problems at all. Quality, even on the cheapest cables, is still top notch.

Here is a link to the HMDI -> VGA converters

HDMI Cable, Home Theater Accessories, HDMI Products, Cables, Adapters, Video/Audio Switch, Networking, USB, Firewire, Printer Toner, and more!

I will go read up on the HP cable issues on your link and see what's going on. It's just digital to analog conversion so I don't see how it can be an issues unless the product itself is defective.

    Edit:
    1. If the adapter has a max resolution it might not be the best converter around and may pose problems with certain monitors. If anything you can always talk to a CSR at monoprice before your buy the adapter to make sure it'll work. I have no complaints on this area as well.

Last Sat I posted to find help to connect my external VGA monitor to my M17X - R1 that has only an HDMI out port. I ordered an HP HDMI to VGA Adapter/convertor. It worked only to mirror not extend the desktop.

And it only worked on setup start, soon the monitor blacked out and stayed that way, not mirroring or anything.
    I am running Windows 7.

Guess this is impossible to do.

If there is anyone who has really found a way to extend the desktop on an HDMI port to a VGA external monitor, it would be great to know, but for now I guess I give up.
It's a drag to know I have to buy a new monitor in order to extend the desktop.

HP sells a 24" monitor with an HDMI connection for under $300... everything else I am looking at is even more expensive.
