calling out all M17x R2 owners with the Dell OEM 7970m installed, does anyone else besides me and a few other members experience this issue? our OS apparently shuts down when the gpu's temperature reaches 85 degrees. apparently this issue occurs so far only on the dell 's variant.

Another thing that I can confirm is this issue did not occur on my Nvidia 680m even at 87 degree or higher!

p.s: i am in fact using ic diamond 7, the temps if left at stock can go up till a maximum of 78 degree while playing crysis 2 (multiplayer)

did a little bit of burn in test and i can conclude instead of the usual 78-85 degree, the os shuts down at 83 degree celcius.
well this sure is getting really annoying : S

Same happening to me and at 83-85 laptop is swithich off.
I did resolve this by purchasing cooler pad and so far it is working well.

Now I end up with white screen and somethimes it is working ok, but the screen is line 200% of standard brightness.
My card is Dell so that really strange now.
I think I have re-flash glu with mod bios that was few times mentioned here.

No clue as why so high, I did repaste job twice and with various paste types. Always same result.
Guys just double check with you.... withe the issue with white scree, GPU re-flash was the ony way, right ??

I don't want to end up with damaged screen (one user reported this here) as I think thi sissue is that 7970 is giving 120Hz on the screen.

This gives me the feeling there are different 7970m GPU's but in a other way i think its impossible becuase they are all the same (right?).

My temps where always good, i dont think 120hertz giving you this temps, if so could nobody confirm it?
Some times i think can it be the temps sensors inside the 7970m?

Just trying to think along, if your 7970m idles, what are the temps?

at idle temp mine stays at 35-39 max, as for under full load it gets to around 75+, 1 hour of crysis 2 multiplayer led to a 78 degree tho. FYI mine is a R2 and i have the RGB LED instead of the 120hz. Bear in mind that R3/4 has a better and more suited heat sink to sustain the newer cards. As sar as i'm concerned, i have repasted the gpu 2 times already with IC Diamond 7.

its so weird, it like i have a totally different card.

    Mine idles on 52-53 degrees.
And load is like 63 - 68 degrees.....

I don't think this is becuase opf thermal designs or is it really different.

But ok, i didnt see you had a R2 :)

When i first time installed the 7970m same the problem ~85-86°C shut down. After reinstall, slightly up bent in the 4 clamping pate,i see maybe because they did not fit pretty the memory's and fixes the problem.I do not understand why it does not measure the temperature of the memory card is :( 5870's indicated

There is nothing unusual about hitting 85+ plus on demanding games, from my experience with the Clevo 7970m at least. I've repasted with AC5, and my idle temps are low 30s and peak can reach 90 or so while overclocked and playing Sleeping Dogs, Crysis 2, Max Payne 3, etc. Normal peak temps are around 80 in demanding games.

Anyway, that sucks about the laptop shutting off like that, those temps will not harm the card. Hope you can get that resolved.

i'm just about giving up with the 7970m and switching back to my 680m. Apparently the only solution so far is to do a retention mod and that stil ldoes not solve the auto shutdown issue. so yeah, I give up.
