does anyone use mudbox or maya on M17x r2?

hi guys, just woundering if anyone models on there r2, im finding it very sluggish at 1.7million pollys, like its lagging. Cpu is like 15% and ram is 56% cant understand =/ only have 4 gig ram but its not using all. Tempted to push for a alienware desktop maybe and ditch the laptop =/

 

I'm using Maya, seems to be performing very well, althought the current scenes I'm using has is mainly low poly for match moving. I love how when in Maya, the GPU's can get hot and they'll turn their fans on. Then when rendering the GPU's are cool, so the fans turn off, but the CPU fan turns on. The cooling system in the M17x is impressive, most impressive.

A desktop will always be faster than a lappy with the same specs. That said, I'll still gladly trade a bit of speed for being able to work in a bar, having a nice waitress refill my iced tea.

well you have 8 gig ram! but it gets choppy when it says only likr 70% ram usage! i think i need more ram =/ havent noticed the fan variation yet ;p

Nope, I don't use Mudbox. I'm a hard surface guy. I usually do my modeling in Rhino to bring into Maya. Rhino seems to run fine on this lappy too. I agree about the RAM. My desktop at work has 24 GB of RAM, and we use it, as our scenes given to us from the modeling dept are insanely detailed. I wanted more than 8GB for the laptop but that wasn't an option.

Btw, so many people are saying to not get more than 4GB as you wouldn't notice the advantage. They haven't been using Maya, or any 3d content creation tools. I'll go for more RAM any day of the week.

 

Is it actually the 4gb vs. 8gb that's causing the lag though or is the system buggy? It seems strange that if it's not higher on the use percentage that it's already lagging.


I'm very curious as to what anyone else has to offer as if I did get an m17x I would be using maya on it as well.

 

ye its weird, mudbox fps is like 9 when its 7 million polys but it sculpts with no lag =/ i might do a fresh install 2night! if not ill call for refund or sumthing

 

If you did do a fresh install, how did it go? Did the lag stop?

 

still, there! i think my comp might have issues. so i ordered a refund, there picking up my comp on wednesday and ill reorder frm fresh! manage to get upgrade from 4 gig ram to 8 gig ram for £50 more! (saving £250) as i phoned my old sales guy and told him what i wanted and would order this once i get the funds back into my account.

well i dont know if its drivers or the card, but i made a square, with max divisions for hight length and width, and duplicated them 5 times, and press 3 for a smooth and its really choppy, and cpu = 20% and ram is only like 70%
