    I recently asked my M17xR3 :D .
    with 8gb memory 1333Mhz...
and reading here in the forums, I saw people with 1600MHz HyperX 8GB  ...
and I am in doubt about the real performance difference  ...
and if the upgrade for me would be valid    .

Must be the doubts of many people
and I hope with this topic can help
Not only for me but for everyone. ;) ;)

    Thanks in advance! :D

forget it. even if you bought 1600Mhz hyperx it would only run at the standard frequency. Don't bother.

XMP Profile 2 lets even the 2630qm run memory at 1600 mhz. Will you notice it? Not likely, but its nice for benchmarking.

hi guys, i have a question about the memory :D
    my m17x r3 arrived with 2x2gb 1333mhz ram memory.
and i bought a 4gb memory stick. and planing to buy one more.
The question is: Can i put all the memory together? 2x2gb and 2x4gb, total 12gb ram memory?

In most real life situations, you won't notice the few milliseconds that are shaved off using 1600 vs 1333. Of course, in a game, a few milliseconds can mean the difference between fragging or getting fragged. Right?

If you're into benchmarking, bragging rights, or perceived gains, then get the hyperx. Otherwise, you can save yourself a few (or several, depending on where you are) extra dollars and get 1333.

Besides, 2x4GB Kingston HyperX 1600 sticks is cheaper than adding an additional 4GB of their unknown 1333 to the R3 through Dell. Why pay Dell for something that they'll probably run out of and delay your order for, haha. ;)

I'm at work and don't have any screenshots but my WEI went from 7.5 to 7.8 when i installed the Hyper X ram. So from a benchmark point it will make a difference, but I really can't tell the difference. I had a promo code from newegg so I picked up 4x4gb for fairly close to the same price as other brands of 1333.

I'm not ago the numbers ;) , and nobody likes to rip money
wondered whether the gain in the real world is good  , if possible in numbers

Real world gain will only come in with things that take time to process, such as video or music encoding and photo editing. Playing games you will probably not even get much of a framerate more of an increase. So unless a couple seconds in these time intensive tasks matters or you need to have the fastest R3 out there, the 1333mhz kits are fine.

Does anyone know the manufacturer of the 8GB kit that comes with the R3?

    Stock Micron 1333MHz 16GB Vs aftermarket HyperX 1600MHz 8gb
    Basically size Vs speed.

Most people say you don't need 16GB RAM, but mine came with that size as stock (standard pre-configuration in AP region). Is it really worth spending more money on aftermarket RAM in this case?

Yes already 8gb is the max that we need to think in the coming years!
The doubt that is $ 100, worth the upgrade 1333 to 1600.

Hah, that's a strong blanket statement, I know of many programs that can take advantage of 16GB of ram. I would say "most people don't need 16gb of ram" instead of your noob comment.
For people that do things like 3d solid modeling/FEA or large photoshopping or video editing, 16gb of ram can be helpful.

16GB of RAM is also great for virtualization. I for one can see myself upgrading to 16GB once my environment is setup on my laptop.

I use virtualization, I just haven't shifted my VM's from my old machine to the new R3. If you have a few running a one time, it is fairly easy to use a lot of RAM.
I find that the slowest thing seems to be the speed on the disks, once they doing more work trying to serve mutliple OS's plus the host OS.

That's generally the bottleneck behind VMs, besides not having a VT-capable processor. (Which was my case for 3 years until I finally decided to splurge for the m17x) I'd definitely love to know how fast a VM runs on SSD. Probably once 256GB comes at decent price, I'd put my server on it to see how smooth it is.

No offense, but considering your 100% incorrect comments such as

    ...You're still one yourself!

Many people come here and ask questions just to ask questions - or already have an answer in mind but want to contribute to 'the discussion'. There's no reason to trounce on people's questions or call them noobs.

    edit:

anyway, as for the original point of this thread

Most users will not see any benefit at all in using 1600mhz ram. I see minor benefit in long duration renders. The timings seem to work well with a 2630QM in terms of reducing memory errors during renders (I've had zero with 3dsmax2011).
16gb is never a bad idea, but is rarely required.
