does anyone ever swap out their fans? either due to them being broken or just for better fans? it seems like a super easy switch if any companies made similar sized fans..........

You do not need to swap the fans unless they are broken.
If you wanted to swap fans for better cooling, it is better to get a laptop cooler. I use zalman nc2000. Other good models are NZXT Cryo, Antec p200.

I am thinking of a cooler for my recently order Mx17 r3, it says the unit is 16.14 wide... and the nc2000 is listed at 15.75 on newegg... do both the laptop's back rubber feet sit on the cooler? from the images i have seen the rubber feet are very close to the edge.

    Nice Pic!
i have my little notebook on a zalman nc1000, i like it...
I notice you cooler is facing backwards... the front it tapered the back is raised.
Are you doing this for function? or just to show the branding for the pic?

    Thanks

He is doing it for function because the NC-2000 has the fans more towards the front where the M17x has the fans to the rear.

Also the Cryo LX is an awesome cooler but after a while of use the rubber coating has worn off and I have a scratch on the bottom of my laptop because of it sliding. :(

That is for function, the cooling effect is much better when you turn it 180* because the vents are at the back of the laptop.
I use 2 rubber feet for hammocks to raise the front of the cooler (the front is at the back).
