I'm pretty much dead set on getting a m17x r3 soon. It will be my first laptop. I know I can build a desktop system for way less but i need a laptop for school as well. I'm just curious when at home I plan on gaming non stop sometimes will this be bad? Lets say I play world of warcraft or crysis 2 for 5 hours straight. Will the desktop shut down? Do i need to purchase a cooling system for it? I will be in a fairly cool house, gaming heavy will the stock fans be enough to power game for hours on end? plugged in of course. I also don't plan on over clocking

Civ 5 while not graphically intense gaming for hours has rendered little stress on the system.

System should perform great and stay cool.

Sweet thanks for the response. As for social life, well I'm married, and the wife likes to play as well. Also the majority of all my best friends play WoW, and fps games, it works out great :) Thanks for the quick responses.

I agree with this, the fans may not bother some, but nothing beats a good quality headset for game playing.

As far as heat expansion/contraction of the components, it's better to be hot for 5 hours straight than hot for 1 hour, then turn off. Then back on and hot for another hour after cooling, then back off....etc.

The fans can get a bit loud. Be SURE to get the 6970m and 2720qm if you can. I hear bad things about the 460m (now 560m), and I love the 6970m, it blows through all of my games besides Metro 2033, which is just poorly optimized lol.

Avoid, the 460m Nvidia card. not very recommended(Coming from a current 460m owner).
The 2720 is the best you can get moneywise. The 2820 only has .1 ghz higher and its not much of a performance difference. I checked by finding a person in my local area who has the 2720 while I have the 2820. Both ran w/ 460m's and the performance difference isn't really noticable processor wise.

I've been trying to get them to replace it with the 6970 but they're pretty stubborn. It probably doesn't help i'm not a very pushy person over the phone T_T

When I had my m18 I always kept it on to cool off after a few hour session then I turned it off after 10 minutes or so.

Also, I was thinking about getting the 460 (for the 3D) since I have a 580 in my current desktop. Besides the crappy performance in games - whats wrong with it?

When i'm at home i managed to play for 8 hour straight (also for me toilet is 2 meter away ahahah) World of Warcraft (raiding can take a loooot of time, sometime :D ) Also here at work, i don't count with internet connection on the "container" where i live (prefab containers, with bathroom and bedroom...that's all... in the midle of the sahara desert :p) An gaming is the only things i have to pass the time here.. i can play several hours of Mass effect 2 or Dragon Age 2, my laptop has cpu and gpu overclocked... no problem at all.

As somebody said, as long as you get some food and go to the toilet from time to time, you should be fine :D

Or, if you're really desperate, you can pack a sack lunch and use the toilet as your gaming workstation. :)

Is gaming for hours bad for the laptop? = No. The laptop has a very good cooling system, there is no need to worry about it.

Is gaming for hours bad for your eyes? = Yes. Excessive gaming will degrade your eyesight. Make sure to look away from the screen every 20 mins for a few secs to prolong the longlivity of your eyes.

It's also not good for your social life. If you have one before it becomes a habit, you won't once it does.

And your point would be? Interacting with actual humans is vastly overrated... or so I've heard.
