so my R4 got bricked while trying to flash to a09

called dell.. they said i have to send it to depot for mobo replacement.. i insisted on them just shipping me the mobo.. i can replace the mobo myself.. or even set up an appointment for in-home tech with a mobo on hand.. i'd prefer to oversee the repairs if i can't do it myself..

rep put me on hold for like 10min while he checked with lvl 2.. came back and said no.. depot only.. dell is sending me a fedex box..

so what's the deal..? i've read numerous threads about in-home mobo replacements.. i do not want to send my R4 to the depot!

i want to call dell back and demand in-home service like my warranty states. those of you that have had in-home mobo replacements, did you say anything in particular to dell?

    thanks in advance guys/gals!

replacing the motherboard requires the machine be stripped all the way down, then put back together 100% right. I'm not sure the in-house service techs have the experience to do that. If it helps I have my mobo replaced 3 times at the depot and each time they did a great job. :)

Tell them to go to fly a kite.

They send techs out all the time to replace motherboards (I had mine replaced 3 times in two weeks). Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to send crap back, and they can send someone to you (NBD) to take care of any issues you may have

As bad a reputation as Depot Service has, I will take their experience over my region's on-site service technicians lack thereof any day.

On site techs can do any replacement necessary but experience varies. I usually get the same tech every time and he has replaced motherboards plenty. He has also worked on the Alienware systems but says he doesn't get many calls on them.

I've had two AW's MB replaced in-home in the last year. An M18x and M17x.

I think they are getting a few of these and are trying to keep the cost down. You paid for in-home and they have identified the part that needs replacing so you might have to escalate another way. try hitting up the @dellcares twitter account, they can at least check the call out and give you a reason if they can't get you the correct service?

We better write that one down in the books. That is the first time I heard something good about depot service.

I just had a good experience with Depot service. Their record with me is now 1 of 4, but that's better than 1 of 10 using at-home tech support.

There are about a million things that could go wrong with stripping your machine right down and putting it back together again. I am a server tech for a big data center company and I wouldn't want to do it just because if ANYTHING went wrong, I can see them not covering it under warranty in the future. My return to depot services have all been pretty quick so aside from the inconvenience of not having a computer for a few days I would just take the return to depot and get it replaced, IMO.
