gtx 675m really worth swapping a 580m?

the 580m runs at 620 mhz and from what i heard so does the 675m with similiar architecture of the 460m. does the new 675m make that much of an improvement in games compared to the 580m? if so would i be able to swap out my 580m for the 675m to use in m17xr3 or will it only be available for the new alienware lineup coming up.

 

As I understand it and as some members here have mentioned before, the 675M is the same card as the 580M with a different name.

 

jthesmooth, AZN is 100% correct...the 675m is not a kepler, but a rebrand based on the old 40nm die. You want 680m which will sport the true 28nm kepler core

You can take a 580m and flash it to a 675 right now

yee , you guys can flash it but , normal flash wont help , you have to force flash, and show off your friends that you are the first guy on earth with gtx 675.

Just seems not worth the effort. Plus, if a 580M is playing all the games sufficiently, why bother? Also flashing will gain no performance increase. May as well just overclock.

Nope, because Dell 580Ms work full power in any other laptop, pau1ow has one in his 15" laptop and it never throttles :/

The 660m is a true 28nm kepler based on the new gk107 core...but it is positioned for the mid tier. We don't know much about it because nvidia is being vague on the 660m specs.

It can "up to" 384 nvidia cores and it can be clocked "up to" 835mhz, HOWEVER, we do know 100% that the 660m will come with a 128-bit memory bus which will cripple the card

Still hoping to see the specs on the upcoming 680m, but it will probably be after the summer before that happens. Looks like nvidia is honing the 28nm manufacturing process on the lower end cards first

 

The thing is if Dell is basing throttling rules on the reported name of the card or other vBios effected identifiers then it actually MIGHT get rid of the throttle. Simply because the M17x bios would not see it as a 580m and would not apply the 580m rules.

If someone has the 675m bios it would be worth a shot, I would not be surprised if it completely negates all the Dell throttling, at least until Dell gets around to updating the system bios to include a throttling profile for the 675m.

Interesting theory Yoda. Yes it would be worth a shot. I have a feeling though that the throttling is based on the DeviceID, not the name. But its still worth a shot

 

Flashing the 675M vBIOS might cause your fan to spin at full speed or not spin at all since there's no fan table for it in the M17x R3's EC, speculation of course.

I'm only considering kepler , maybe if they release a kepler 680m then it might be a worthy upgrade over my 6970. I just hope they stick to mxm slots.

6970 is a nice card and that is even less powerful than 580m , so I'd say stick with your 580.

I got it from a reseller.

 

I doubt it will fix the bios because the rest of the nvidia cards throttle as well, but I guess it doesn't hurt to try.

Also I've found with Optimus/switchable graphics one can recover from wrong flashes because the laptop always starts on integrated...

This is true, vBios flash on Optimus systems are pretty much risk free, even if the card is bricked you just reflash while running on integrated. Be sure to post your results, and a GPU-Z of your flashed card, if it works I would flash to 675m in an instant.

I think there is a good chance it will work, it will just depend on how the throttling is coded in the bios.

 

A change in hardware ids however, would render 3D useless as the certifications are specific to the particular card model. Eg the 485m is specification wise similar to the 580m and works in the R3 perfectly but with no 3D.

Honestly, he should be banned, this was clearly just a stunt. You don't have the bios, it is NOT NDA protected, Nvidia has fully announced the 675m, there is nothing to protect. As soon as resellers actually get the card and dump the bios they can release it. NDA protected is not even a good excuse, bios files have no identifying information, so if you PM it to someone there is no possible way for Nvidia to enforce an NDA anyway, not to mention you aren't a reseller so you aren't bound by anything. You just don't have it, got backed into a corner, and made up a lame excuse to try and cover yourself.
