Has anyone ever though about upgrading or cooling the VRMs on the M17x R4? my understanding is there a limit on how far you can push a black edition cpu due to the VRMs.

AMD used to call their higher binned/unlocked CPU's "Black" so thats what I am assuming OP is referring to, and yo answer your question, you should be fine

When i looked up the intel unlocked cpu i have, i had noticed the logo was black instead of blue as usual and had a brain fart. They say 4gh is about the wall, could do more but, the m17x r4 VRMs are a bottleneck.

Many people run those machines and their earlier or later sibings at above 4.0GHZ, I think the issues more or less comes down to how well binned the chips are and just plain general power/thermal restraints

    Are they bottlenecked by temperature?

If so, you can get creative about trying to cool them.

Woodzstack sells 5 heat pipe coolers for the CPU and GPU, supposedly tested to better quality than the eBay ones. and yeah you can get creative but, what they were saying in the other thread that it wasn't temp but, power it was starving/throttling to go past 4.0. i wonder if 4.0 is the actually OC or just a turbo speed. The last CPUs i've ever OCed were core 2 quad and Phenom 2.

generally for the work and such I charge $125CAD but I shouldn't be advertising pricing and such on these forums.

Definitely not VRM as I run my i7-3940XM at 4.4GHz without issues, using stock cooler since those full copper ones with extra heatpipe does not work very well or at least those of us who bought one, its either bad manufacturing or pipes with holes in them because I saw worse temperatures while using it, I even sanded the surface without much help, sanding the surface on the stock cooler did help with like 5 degrees less. Only use the finest sandpaper for it though.

3920xm maxes out at 3,8 single/3,6 quad, 3940xm is +0,1 on each, so everything past that is OC.

Btw. how thick is the pad on the VRMs next to the CPU, 0,5mm?

I put a 0.5mm thermal pad across my m17xr4 VRM's but it didnt affect my Overclock on my 3920xm. You can try upping the TDP past the stock 68w by going into Power>Cpu power configuration then making a custom TDP profile

Ok so 0,5mm, was just wondering if there is any pad from factory, when I wanted to repaste there was none at all, and I thought the pre-owner may have removed it.

There are 2 versions! At least form what I read, what folks were picking up on eBay which weren't the best build quality and the ones Woodzstack is selling, which is supposedly better quality. Also do you have the upgraded CFM fan?

He just resells sanded versions of those ones. I got my GPU heatsink from the ebay seller today (5 pipe vs stock 3 pipe) and it is definitely better despite the surface not being flat. My gpu gets down to 5 above air temp if i put the fans to max, and it was around 55c during benchmarks

No fan upgrade, sanded the stock heatsink and applied kryonaut, might do metal not sure and might do the fan upgrade because it do get pretty toasty over time doing render tasks.
